The GOG Preservation Program has welcomed two new titles: Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, timed with Star Trek Day, and Armikrog.

Three existing program titles - Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst - also received special updates.

Alongside the announcement, GOG highlighted its partnership with the Big Box Collection, which provides downloadable 3D scans of iconic game boxes. The scans can be viewed and rotated using the default 3D applications on Windows and Mac, and printable versions let collectors build DIY physical boxes for display.

The announcement also includes an interview with Benjamin Wimmer, creator of the Big Box Collection:

On physical vs. digital browsing: Wimmer notes that digital storefronts could better individualize collections by integrating manuals, notes, and save games directly into launcher pages, allowing users to truly “own” those spaces.

Preservation perspective: He emphasizes that gaming is becoming recognized as cultural heritage, citing the demoscene’s UNESCO recognition in Poland. He advocates for preservation heroes to emerge, similar to how Christopher Nolan championed preserving Kubrick’s films.

Future vision: Wimmer hopes to expand Big Box Collection’s metadata and integrate it with networks like the Virtual International Authority File to support future gaming historians.
