Steam games constantly crash and freeze.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 18:35

Hi guys, Ive been having this problem where I would play a game on steam and it would randomly just crash, for example I would be playing a game such as Pummel party and the game would just randomly close, It got to the point where I stopped playing games altogether on my system, and just used it for work and videos and such. Recently I've tried playing Helldivers 2 but every-time I play and put in around 30min on it the whole screen just freezes, and this is not only hell divers but many other games that are considered more graphically intense.

I would just play the game and the game would randomly freeze , but I could still hear sounds, I cant even alt tab from it so it seems like my whole system is freezing, at that point I would have to just force shut down my computer. I thought switching to an operating system that is more suited to gaming would maybe help me, so I switched to Nobara but the problem persisted even after I installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my system, and did so much changes that I found online. Last night it happened again and I was just so pissed so I decided to ask people about it. Im not sure if anyone else has experienced this and fixed it. do you guys have any suggestions on how I can trouble shoot this? here are my specs:

Operating System: Nobara Linux 39

KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.4

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.1.0

Qt Version: 6.6.2

Kernel Version: 6.8.7-200.fsync.fc39.x86_64 (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core Processor

Memory: 15.6 GiB of RAM

Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660/PCIe/SSE2

Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

Product Name: B450M DS3H

NVIDIA Driver Version: 550.67

I've Tried multiple fixes, Ive changed wayland into Xorg and the problem still persisted, ive updated my NVIDIA drivers, tried many configurations in proton and finally just used protong-GE but the problem still persists, I've checked my drives with SMART and they seem ok. I also have some steam logs of when i was playing, they are quite massive and I'm not sure how to post them here, but the lines before and during the crash go like this:

577.967:0124:026c:info:vkd3d-proton:vkd3d_pipeline_library_disk_thread_main: Pipeline cache marked dirty. Flush is scheduled. 578.880:0178:019c:trace:seh:GetModuleFileNameExA (process=00000144, module=00000000, 00789B90, 260) 579.656:0124:026c:info:vkd3d-proton:vkd3d_pipeline_library_disk_thread_main: Flushing disk cache (wakeup counter since last flush = 69). Need help with Fifa/Origin/EA-App trouble

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 18:28

So, I have this old PC running Mint I want to play some couchy games like football on. I have Fifa 21, doesn't work on that one because of specs. So I ended up buying a used CD of Fifa 13 which takes significantly lower specs and I read somewhere runs supposedly well on wine according to some old post from somewhere on the cheapsies. Turns out, there is a problem: it requires Origin.

I can install Origin either from the CD or also from Lutris, but all that does is want to update itself to EA App, the new thing replacing it. If I update Origin to EA App, shit stops working entirely. If I install EA App directly (which so far has only worked for me with Proton Experimental), my Fifa CD wants to install origin even if I have its successor actively running on the same wineprefix. There seems to be no winning on this one. I can't even try adding it to my account on my newer PC that has windows because it lacks a fucking CD drive - so for now, I basically seem to have scammed myself by buying that.

I also found some advice to run Origin in Windows Vista mode, no such luck because it's unsupported in the last version.

Has anyone got any advice how to actually install something like that?

Nintendo Joy-Con doesn't connect to Arch Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 18:27

Today I have tried to connect my Nintendo joy-cons to an Arch Linux running Hyprland (Wayland).

I have installed hid-nintendo-dkms and joycond-git then I have tried to connect it via bluetooth. When I pair it with my laptop I get the "Connected" notification, however sync animation on the joy-con doesn't disappear and it doesn't detect any input.

I have tried to install the libraries mentioned above through git and make them myself but it didn't solve the issue.

The problem is the same as this but I didn't find any answers provided.

P.S. Idk if its a good description, but I can provide any specific info if needed.

Modding a steam game requires an additional exe file to be installed, how do I do this?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 17:11

Specifically I'm modding new vegas and the mod in question is this:

https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/67883

It requires this:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

I downloaded vcredist_x86.exe but at this point I don't know how to install it in a way that would make the mods actually use it. My wild guess is to replace the exe steam points to towards vcredist and after it installed go back to what it was before but I wouldn't want to fuck something up.

Where to start on building a native mod manager?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 17:06

I have been using Linux for a while now and want to create an app project to learn Linux app development. I also tend to play Skyrim quite a bit (probably too much), and I'm curious if it's feasible to create a native mod manager for it on Linux. If it is, where should I start? What skills will I need to learn? I have some knowledge of C++ and Python, although I haven't used them in a while.

What are your guys suggestion?

Looking for hardware advice to build a Linux-based gaming PC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 16:35

I recently upgraded my old GTX970 & i7-4790k setup to AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D with Gigabyte 4080 SUPER.

I originally planned to install Win10. But after a painful, intrusive installation that forced me to sign in at installation, always-online for login (you seriously cant use PIN, if you do not have internet), plenty of intrusive "use microsoft apps", and too much advertisements in start menu and notification menu, I decided that its time to leave Windows for good.

I went with Ubuntu for now, because that's what I am comfortable with, and so far everything is working good.

There's one thing I am not happy with: The Motherboard. I use a Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX. Unfortunately, sensors are not supported and I was not able to get lm-sensors to read the I/O (?) chip that is supposed to deliver sensor data. My first attempt in following the guides to get support for the Gigybyte ended in a bricked system that would not recognise the graphics card anymore (do not ask me how I managed to do that).

Since I still have a week left to RMA, I am looking for a well supported board under Linux. I have my eyes on the ASUS TUF Gaming X670E-Plus:

Anyone has experience with this board under Linux? Does it work OOTB? Thank you for all advice!

World of Warcraft Dragonflight intermittent stalls in certain areas

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. April 2024 - 16:32

So I've been having an issue where my system just locks up for 4 seconds, game reloads the textures and this loops until I move out of the area. VRAM filling up? but why would that cause entire system to lock up? RAM usage doesn't spike when this happens. I'm using steam to run wow
