Stuttering with Nvidia drivers

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 22:26

Hello again, I'm trying to play war thunder on my main PC, and I tried running it on lutris, steam, and from the native launcher without success, before thinking on swapping my drivers to the Nvidia ones

I was using the noveau drivers, and the game didn't got past the loading screen.

The only issue is that the Nvidia drivers give a constant stuttering to my entire system. The game is unplayable, as the stuttering increases when Playing too, but at least I could launch a battle

I tried downloading the 545 drivers, but it failed. Tried the 470 drivers and it's the same. Xorg nouveau doesn't has this stuttering problem, every time I launch war thunder with those drivers, the screen blinked on the first frame, and it didn't loaded

Here is some info about my graphics card:

nvidia-smi: https://pastebin.com/GSfj7GD6

lspci -k | grep -A 3 -E "(VGA|3D)" : 1:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650] (rev a1) Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650] Kernel driver in use: nvidia Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

And I'm running Linux Mint 21.3 on an I5-6500 with 16 gb DDR3

Cursor is moving around while playing games with gamescope

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 21:59

I play apex legends and it really screws you over to not know where your mouse cursor is when you open up a deathbox for example and overall it's just a nuisance, I want to be able to get a quick swap but for some reason regardless of if i have a menu open, my cursor moves with it

Does anyone know a fix to this?

For those eusing Lampray for BG3...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 21:49

I've got a lot of mods added in and the majority seem to be working. However, the ones that aren't don't rely on load order. Almost everything is set to Standard Mod with the exception of a few that are set to No JSON Mod.

What's the best approach for fixing mods that won't load? Basically, it seems that some spell mods (Scarlet Warrior and FRostbite Blade) and a few subclasses for Sorc and Lock aren't loading despite other spells loading no problem. I haven't gone past the CC screen yet, so I'm sure there are others that aren't working, too.

Any help would be appreciated, TIA!

Is there a command line option to tell TF2 which display to start on?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 21:44

64-bit Vulkan TF2 is here, and everything is flaky again. I can get it working by launching in windowed mode. But this leaves me with another problem.

I have two displays, my laptop's internal screen and an external monitor. The internal display is set to 1920x1080, the external to 3840x2160. The internal is primary. I want to run TF2 on the secondary external display, at full size. "-windowed -noborder -w 3840 -h 2160 -secure -steam" should do it. But the game always starts on the primary monitor, and it starts at the size of that monitor, 1920x1080. If i move it onto the other monitor, it stays that size, occupying a quarter of the screen.

Is there any way to force TF2 to start on the secondary display?

The odd thing is that until the 64-bit update, it did the right thing - it would start in full screen mode on the secondary display. I have no idea why, or if i had to do some magic years ago to make that happen.

I'm running Steam as a flatpak on Fedora 38, with Cinnamon as my desktop environment; this is still using Xorg. The laptop has NVIDIA discrete graphics, which i am forcing to run all the time with the good old Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes".

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 21:24

Is anyone using Thrustmaster T300RS GT or other Thrustmaster wheels? I want to fully switch from Windows to Linux but I am hesitant because I use my wheel regularly. I saw there is a kernel module and driver for the Thurstmaster wheels but I don't that it's working well or not. Thanks for any help in advance.

Apex Legends is NOT working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 19:55

Before I start my little rant and request, I would like to say that I am not a programmer, my brother convinced me to download linux and he did most of it for me.

After Apex Legends had quite a large update as well as me updating my OS (Endevour), through the eos-update thing, Apex is no longer launching. I use steam and once I press the big juicy green PLAY button, Apex Legends says its launching, then says its running and then goes back to the green PLAY button and doesnt launch shit. I have tried a couple of things I saw online: one individual used the bleeding edge version of proton experimental and that seemed to help him, I've checked that I am on the correct drivers (545.29.02), I have even completely uninstalled and reinstalled Apex Legends (which took hours) just in case it was a problem with some faulty file, however nothing I have done has worked.

I am considering uninstalling linux and going back to Windows since it is much more convenient and I consistently run into problems which I do not know how to fix, where I end up nagging my brother to come and help me fix it.
If you have reached this, thank you for taking the time to read and I hope you consider pouring your knowledge into the comments if you have any idea on how to fix my problem. Thank you.

Slow download on steam?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 19:28

Hi y'all, my download speed on steam seems to be much slower than my real download speed. Running a speed test shows my download speed is around 940mbps, however steam seems to be stuck at around 120 or so. I found this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/16e1l4h/slow_steam_downloads_try_this/

and it seemed to alleviate the issue a bit. Disabling http2 seems to bring it up to around 680-750 which im ok with, the other config option brings it down to 400-500 so im not suing that one. I can't really seem to find a ton of info about this issue though, is this a known bug? is this something wrong with my config? some googling said to try disabling ipv6 or using dnsmasq but neither of those had an impact.

fedora 40, kernel 6.8.8. Result of lspci | grep -i Ethernet:

workaround for primary xwayland screen name switching

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 18:20

So i have the problem that my screen names in xwayland are switching a lot like on sleep mode and so on.

since i have a multi monitor setup and of one wide and one horizontal screen i can use the resolution to determine the correct primary screen.

https://git.bau-ha.us/nachtpfoetchen/dromi_dotfiles/-/blob/main/scripts/x_prime.sh?ref_type=heads

fixes that for me on debian stable with KDE. idk if thats an issue on other distribution.

Setting that as a script running before the game in lutris just makes it super comfy to use.

If you want it to use for your own setup make sure that get_wide_screen function returns the correct XWayland name of the screen that you want to set as primary screen. e.g. XWAYLAND0

TF2 on Linux with Integrated graphics, please help

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 17:56

I wanna play TF2 just like in old times. I currently have a Dell laptop with integrated graphics, around 2 gb Video memory, 32 RAM, and when I play TF2 (I have a biometrics of PC with CPU load and CPU temperature), it shows that the CPU is utilized only for 20 percent. Why is that? And TF2 is unplayable, I get 20 FPS while CPU temperature never gets over 60 Celcius.

Ubuntu 22.04 , laptop is a Dell Inspiron 7410

Dosbox-Staging 0.81.1 Has Been Released

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 15:23

The release fixes the following 0.81.0 regressions:

Regression fixes

Fix Wing Commander 3 videos and cutscenes appearing height-doubled.

Introduce vga_render_per_scanline = off workaround to fix the crash-at-startup regression in Deus, Ishar 3, Robinson’s Requiem, and Time Warriors.

Fix the Tandy version of Impossible Mission II crashing at startup.

Fix regression in Tyrian where pressing the arrow keys get registered twice in menus.

Fix starting In Extremis resulting in a black screen.

Fix wrong colours in Spell It Plus! (needs machine = svga_paradise).

Fix wrong colours and garbled graphics in Spong and Exobius.

Fix squashed video output in the text mode game Indenture.

Fix the DOSBox Staging window gaining focus on every emulated video mode change.

Fix crash when exiting DOSBox Staging while in fullscreen mode on macOS and Linux.

Fix not being able to disable OPL emulation with oplmode = none.

Enhancements and fixes

We’ve also backported a number of enhancements and fixes for long-standing issues:

Introduce vmem_delay = on to help with flickering graphics and speed issues in Hercules, CGA, EGA, and early VGA games. This has proven to improve compatibility with Future Wars, Operation Stealth, Quest for Glory II, Hostages, The Gold of the Aztecs, Crazy Brix, Corncob Deluxe, and Corncob 3-D so far.

Improve support for multiple joysticks/game controllers (the mapper could behave erratically if you had more than one controller connected).

Emulate a memory-expanded PCjr machine more faithfully. This improves game compatibility; for example, Space Quest (v1.0x and v2.2) and King’s Quest (1986 PCjr DOS version) now work instead of hanging the emulator.

CD Audio is no longer muted in certain parts of Time Warriors and Alpha Storm.

The batch file installer of Alpha Storm no longer fails.

Forcing single scanning via crt-auto-arcade should now work with more programs.

Fix various VGA double scanning related edge cases in demoscene productions.

Detecting “repurposed” EGA video modes with 18-bit VGA DAC colours has been made more robust when using the crt-auto shader (should result in a double-scanned VGA shader being picked).

Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese translations have been added, and most of the other translations have been updated.

Graphics-related changes:
  • VGA double scanning fixes & improvements

  • Option to emulate video memory access delays

  • Option for legacy VGA rendering

  • Option for legacy palette behaviour

  • Tandy graphics fixes

  • Other fixes

Sound-related changes
  • Implement seeking in MSCDEX

  • Fix not being able to disable OPL emulation

  • Other fixes:

Fixed crash when output filter cutoff frequencies are not below half the sample rate (e.g., by setting rate = 11025 and sbtype = sbpro1 which selects a 8 kHz low-pass filter by default).

Fixed FluidSynth and MT-32 crashing the emulator when the host sample rate is set to 8000 Hz.

Input-related changes

Fixed a keyboard handling regression in Tyrian where pressing the arrow keys get registered twice, making the menus very hard to use.

Fixed a keyboard handling regression in In Extremis where starting the game only resulted in a black screen.

Fixed various problems in the mapper when using more than a single game controller (e.g., with two joysticks connected, mapping the controls of the first joystick could randomly target the mappings of the second one and vice versa).

Fixed obscure regression where the timed = on joystick setting messed up the available free memory reported by the FreeDOS MEM.EXE command.

DOS integration related changes
  • Improved expanded PCjr emulation

  • DOS shell improvements:

Fixed a bug that caused the batch file installer of Alpha Storm to fail.

The help text of the IMGMOUNT command now mentions the very handy wildcard mounting option. E.g., you can use the IMGMOUNT A floppy*.img -t floppy command to mount multiple floppy images, then cycle between them with Ctrl+F4 at runtime (Cmd+F4 on macOS).

The LOADFIX command’s help text is more complete now (some options were not documented previously).

When a batch file was being instantiated, the echo state from the parent was not being transferred correctly if the parent was another batch file.

Localisation-related changes
  • Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese translations have been added.

  • Updates to the Dutch, German, and Polish translations.

Miscellaneous changes
  • Attempting to change unchangeable settings via the CONFIG command at runtime is no longer silently accepted (without doing anything) but an error is raised instead.

  • Unknown command-line switches starting with dashes are now ignored and a warning is logged—DOSBox Staging will not try to execute them anymore. As a side effect, the current working directory was mounted as the C drive, which led to very non-intuitive behaviour.

  • The Windows installer now creates a Start Menu shortcut to launch DOSBox Staging without showing the console window (DOSBox Staging (no console window) menu item).

  • The Windows installer no longer starts DOSBox Staging automatically when the installation is completed.

  • Most config settings are now correctly reverted to their defaults when an invalid value is set, and their values are kept in sync with the active setting.

Recommendation for ITX (am5) mainboard that works with linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12. Mai 2024 - 15:08

Hi! I'm trying to configure an ITX PC with an AMD chip (Ryzen 5 7600X), and I need a recommendation for an ITX motherboard (AM5, with WiFi, and Bluetooth would be great too) that works fluently with Linux. I was thinking of the ASROCK A620I Lightning WiFi DDR5 AM5, but I heard it has a MediaTek WiFi card (poor support) and 2.5Gbit Realtek Ethernet.

Thank you!
