Dragon's Dogma 2 is crashing my rig

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 00:25

Background: AMD CPU/GPU. Fedora 40.

I would call it a hard crash, but that may not technically be accurate, because oddly when the game/PC freezes, I can still hear the music playing, and USB devices still seem to be connecting/disconnecting. But for all intents and purposes, the PC is hosed, because none of the emergency commands (Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc) seem to work. I have to power cycle.

From looking at the last journalctl file, it looks like my AMD GPU driver is crashing:

Process 2593 (cinnamon) crashed and dumped core.

This usually indicates a programming error in the crashing program and should be reported to its vendor as a bug. (there's a huge stacktrace on the Cinnamon core dump as well, it was just too big for me to copy paste here)

Any suggestions on what I can do about this? I tried googling the GCVM_L2_PROTECTION_FAULT_STATUS error, but haven't found much.

Tekken 7 runs fine for the first time, but crashes afterwards on Fedora 41 (Proton v9.0.2)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 31. Januar 2025 - 00:02

Hello fam

Has anyone been able to get Tekken 7 working on Fedora 41 ? It runs fine for the first time but then, if I quit and relaunch, it crashes after a while.

If I relaunch the game after clearing its corresponding compatdata folder, it runs fine. Is there any workaround for this problem ?

Thanks !

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 23:48

I have stellaris on steam, i recently transitioned from windows to mint, so far it works and nothing is on fire

But there is an issue, stellaris runs really damn slow, like half second lag even in menus before starting a game

I run it through Proton 9.0-4, i know its linux native, but is there a way to make it run good without linux native version? Because i have this one specific thing due which i need to have it in windows version

'Clutch Wireless Hyperx' controller on Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 22:59

Has anybody made the Clutch Hyperx controller function on Linux?

If so, what does it take?

I'm using Linux Mint with the latest kernel.

Also your opinion on the controller itself would be useful. I'm thinking of buying it.

Thanks

Low GPU utilization in Resident Evil 4 Remake causing low fps and stutters

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 22:57

I had been having issues with low GPU utilization in RE4 Remake using a gtx 1080 and chalked it up to nvidia issues, but after having replaced all my computer parts and moving to a 7800xt I am still having the exact same problem.

I'm currently using Arch Linux and have tried multiple different versions of proton with all sorts of different launch commands without any success on fixing this issue. All other games I've played have worked perfectly fine on linux, and RE4 Remake also works fine on windows for me. I have also tried both the most recent kernel as well as the lts kernel neither of which made a difference.

In the included proton log a few lines seem to be of note

Line 1857 473.500:0120:0124:warn:vkd3d-proton:d3d12_device_create_vkd3d_queues: Could not allocate an out of band queue for queue family 0. All out of band work will happen on the in band queue.

And on line 1861 473.500:0120:0124:info:vkd3d-proton:d3d12_device_init_workarounds: AMDGPU broken kernel detected. Enabling manual memory clearing path. However, I only get this error on the latest kernel, and it goes away on the lts kernel, but the gpu utilization issue and poor performance remains.

I would like to troubleshoot this more and see if there's anything I can do but after an entire system swap, kernel swap, multiple versions of proton, and multiple sets of launch commands I'm not sure where to go from here.

EA Background Service: AES256 CBC decryption failed, Failed to deserialize the config store

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 22:46

I'm trying to use the EA app on Linux, I've tried installing it with various Proton and Wine versions (7, 8, 9, experimental, GE 7-55, GE 9-23, wine-staging 8.26, 9.22, 10.0) but all of them result in the same issue. EA app says background services crashed, and looking at the logs of the EA app, I see these errors:

https://pastebin.com/tz3tjXem

It seems it's unable to read some config file, so it defaults to the port number of 0, which is invalid (?)

Here is the full log: https://pastebin.com/CPN5Mpn5

I'm not sure if this is even related but the locale settings in the OS is kinda broken, and I haven't been able to fix it. I get this when starting plasmashell for example:

Detected locale "C" with character encoding "ANSI_X3.4-1968", which is not UTF-8. Qt depends on a UTF-8 locale, and has switched to "C.UTF-8" instead.

I made a post in this subreddit 2 days ago about the issue, couldn't find a solution, but I think I now have a lead, so I wanted to make another post, maybe someone else has had this problem? I'd really appreciate any help!
For reference, this was my older post: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1ics0wb/ea_app_closes_2_seconds_after_staring_a_game_on/

I'm on Arch with kernel 6.12.10-arch1-1.

EDIT: i think i resolved my issues. My external was formatted as ExFat instead of Ext4. None of my downloaded games was working.

Why it's not just "flicking a switch" according to Valve.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 21:06

Here's an excerpt from Pierre-Loup Griffais in that Frandroid article, using Firefox's offline translation feature. "It is fundamentally something that requires constant support. So if developers can't provide this support because their SteamOS public is limited, it's something quite natural in fact. It's not fair that they forgot to tick a box or anything; they want to be able to respond to problems, and so they need to have an infrastructure.”

Opensource software is often provided as is, meaning no support. However, if a company chooses to support Linux, simply flicking a switch is not acceptable. A good example of this is Marvel Rivals, where the game was accidentally banning Linux users, and they not only fixed the issue, but unbanned all those players. Now that's awesome, but it means they had to spend time, effort, and money on 2% of the population.

As the Valve Engineer said, it's perfectly natural that a company won't want to spend any of that on 2% of the population (I know the recent number is 4.5%, but on Steam it's still a measly 2%.)

Path of Exile 2 Not loading if files on NTFS (windows partition)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 20:57

Hi guys,

I have a dual boot sys, Win 10 + Arch, - both share "D:" partition which was initially used only by Win 10 (NTFS).

If I move all the files to my linux /home, - game starts and all good, but I need it to stay on "D:" which holds other Steam games which have no problem starting,

only POE2 for some reason does not want to use this location...

It does not spit any error out, simply "PLAY" button becomes green after 30sec without any msg.

I started game from terminal to get the log you can see below.

Anyone knows the solution?

I tried changing permissions using:
sudo chown -R $roll:$roll /mnt/win_d/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/2694490/pfx

also my fstab.conf mount line is:
UUID=FC88A7B988A77136 /mnt/win_d ntfs defaults 0 0

Intel GMA945 + Direct3D 9 + WineD3D = Super low brightness?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 20:27

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to breathe some new life into my old MacBook 2,1 with Linux to play some early 2000s games like Thief 2. I've tried a few distros like Debian, OpenSuse and currently Lubuntu 22 LTS. The latter because it doesn't use llvmpipe with the i915 driver which kind of increases performance.

All of them however have the same problem: When the game uses Direct3D 9 the in-game brightness is unusably dark with much of the screen entirely black. Raising gamma in-game and with xgamma makes the bright spots brighter but the black stays black causing the image to look like a low color bit depth mess. I can't use DXVK because this chipset doesn't support Vulkan, so WinD3D/OpenGL it is.

With Thief 2 (and T2Fix) I can switch between D3D6 and D3D9, however, the D3D6 version has single digit framerates while the D3D9 is pretty smooth. But you can see the difference:

D3D9 version

D3D6 version with low framerate

Just for fun I also installed AoE2 HD from Steam, it has the same issue:

I've tried several Wine versions from 4 to 6 (on Wine 7 the display stays black no matter what), installed several D3D related winetricks but no success so far.

Other titles that use D3D8 or Direct Draw (like Thief - Deadly Shadows or Age of Empires 2 original version) look fine.

Here's my system info:

Googling didn't help me with that issue. Anyone familiar with that and knows a solution?

Spider-Man 2 - Controller input doesn't work when using Gamescope (HDR)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 19:38

Basically title. If I don't use gamescope, the controller works fine. However using it, the game registers no input from the controller except for menus. The Start/Select buttons do work however. Tried disabling steam input, no dice.

gamescope -e -f -r 120 -W 3840 -H 2160 --hdr-enabled -- %command%

Anyone else?

Can't play Dark Souls Remastered on the native resolution of my monitor

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 19:26

System information:

  • OS: Fedora Linux 40 (Workstation Edition) x86_64
  • Host: Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 16-r1xxx
  • Kernel: 6.11.11-200.fc40.x86_64
  • Resolution: 2560x1440, 1920x1080
  • CPU: Intel i7-14700HX (28) @ 5.300GHz
  • GPU: Intel Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Max-Q / Mobile
  • Memory: 31781MiB

This is not the only game with which I had this problem. I have a monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution. However, when I try to change resolution in the game options, the max resolution is 1920x1080. I even tried to set the resolution in steam launch options but that didn't work, as it launched with 1920x1080.

Having trouble with Dynasty Warriors Origins crashing consistently after the Battle of Xu Province

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 30. Januar 2025 - 19:15

I had an autosave right after completing the Battle of Xu Province, and every time I loaded it, the game would crash. Loading up the game before the battle, if I spent more than a few seconds in Xu the game would crash. It would also consistently crash after bonding with Xun You outside Xiaopei. My PC is a 7800x3d with 32GB RAM and a 7900XTX running Bazzite, and I'd been using the default Proton but switched to Proton Experimental (same issues). The issues do not appear on my Windows PC running a 5800X and a 3070TI, so I think it's probably a Proton issue?
