Looking for hardware advice for a new build.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 15:25

I'm currently running a 6700k and RTX2080ti with my 3440x1440@180hz monitor. I want to build a new SFF pc entirely and my budget is between 150,000php to 200,000php (~2,500 to 3,400 USD). I run Arch Linux with Hyprland/Wayland for my desktop setup.

I'm looking at the 7900XTX and the 4080 Super - I'm aware AMD GPU's are supposedly better for Linux but I haven't had any issues with my Nvidia cards so far (went from GTX1080 to my current RTX2080ti) and considering the cost for both cards are the same here, I feel like the 4080S is the better buy considering the parity rasterized performance plus better upscaling tech etc. I do want to support AMD due to Nvidia's anti-consumer practices but realistically I feel like I should buy the better product for my budget.

Are there really tangible benefits to going for an AMD GPU in Linux? Is there feature parity for their driver suite/utilities in Linux vs Windows? From what I can see online, there isn't a tuning utility for linux on AMD cards, same as Nvidia. I really need a good reason to go for the 7900XTX over the 4080S based on what I've seen with my research.

Similarly, I'm looking at an AMD CPU - the 7600 non X. The 7700 (and X) isn't that much more expensive though, will there be a tangible difference in gaming? I also use my machine for software development, so compiling code is also a consideration. I don't mind spending a little more on my CPU as I haven't had a decent CPU for a long time and I'm sick of my 1% lows and stuttering.

Finally, this would be my first time buying an m.2 drive over SATA, is it worth going for a gen 5 drive over gen 4? Most of my mass storage goes into my home server, the only files I really save locally are when I fork my repos temporarily or video games. My concern comes from reports I've seen of modern games that were ported from the PS5 needing much faster storage than what's typically in a PC. I'm assuming it's not worth it but I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

Thanks!

A couple Proton questions, from a Protonoob

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 13:53

Greetings.

I've dabbled in Proton (including ProtonGE, runs great - though I've not installed ProtonTricks as far as I know) for a bit, though I've run into a couple issues I'd like to properly resolve.

  1. Conan Exiles (as an example) can't use my native keyboard layout for hotkey settings - I tried switching it for the working one in Linux itself, yet it had no effect. Is there a way of switching the keyboard layouts in the Proton layer itself?
  2. FOR AMD GPU users Windows driver utility offers a function called Radeon Super Resolution, I believe, which upscales any game to fullscreen. Is there a way to achieve similar results with Proton?
  3. I've found this utility. Is it in anyway safe/useful to use on Windows in finding out what to add into the Proton layer to make certain game titles work?
  4. There is a game I have a CDVD version of, that won't run citing it runs on "Windows XP/2000/ME". Do you think it could be "spoofed" with Proton somehow? I know how to switch a Wine prefix to a different Windows version, not so much with Proton.
  5. Another game (I think it ought be safe - I tried installing it and playing on my notebook and nothing bad seems to have happened) runs particularly bad. Are there any pointers that come to mind as to how I could fix it (using ProtonGE 9-15)?
  6. From what I figured, playing Star Trek Online, The Lord of the Rings Online and Path of Exile from Linux is possible and not prohibited by either of the companies. Is that correct?

I'm running Ubuntu 24.04.1, CPU AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700G with Radeon™ Graphics × 16, GPU AMD Radeon™ RX 6800

The video might be too loud for your liking, please adjust the volume as you will!

Legenda - Poselství trůnu 2 with it's shaky performance

Heroes oM&M III in Proton (without RSR)

HoM&M III with Radeon Super Resolution (Windows)

Lastly, in another post I inquired about a Minecraft <1.13 versions performance on max details on Linux, rather how to fix it so it runs. I've not managed to figure that one out still. I've no qualms offering some Steam Wallet balance (I don't do PayPal or other such services, I'm afraid) for anyone able to figure it out for me. If you'll know of the solution, just state the price and we can come to an arrangement from there.

Bioshock 2 and Elite Dangerous

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 13:36

I configured a Linux laptop (Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon) to see if I could use Linux as my OS after the Windows 10 support will have ended. Naively I over-estimated the level of virtualization Steam on Linux can provide. After installing Steam I was confronted with the fact that Bioshock 2 (from 2010, ok, it's the remastered version from 2016) and Elite Dangerous (from 2014, ok, with Odyssey expansion from 2020) are not supported.

But I learned a lot about Linux and Linux programs and in fact these two games are the only programs I was not able to make work or find a good substitute for.

Or does anybody know any workaround for these two games?

Edit: Thank you everybody for your helpful comments. I didn't understand before that proton is something to enable inside of Steam, but I found the "Linux Mint gaming setup guide" here in this subreddit. Now all my games are offered to me as downloads, but my hard disk is running out of space. But it's good to know it would work.

Headset "Corsair HS80 Max wireless" suddenly stopped working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 13:22

I installed the latest Nobara and everything worked.

But since yesterday my "Corsair HS80 MAX wireless" suddenly stopped producing any sound. The level is displayed, however, and for the OS it looks like sound should be coming out.

If I switch the audio device to speakers, I get sound through the speakers. The same goes for the display, and if I plug in my old wired headset and select this, it works too.

Only the HS80 no longer produces any sound. I have also tried the USB dongle on several USB ports. The volume is turned up, of course. I have also tried the various profiles (analog stereo output, digital output, ProAudio etc.).

I have of course updated my system (sudo dnf update && sudo dnf upgrade).

The headset is recognized without a manually installed driver.

Is there a way to reset the audio system? Or anything else to get the Headset working again?

Edit:
of course i also restarted my PC

a mouse lives its life in proton 9.0 and above.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 12:34

Hi, I have a problem that has been going on for a long time with proton 9.0 and above, I've been using proton 8 for a long time but now I need dx12 and proton 8 doesn't support it as I understand it. Problem: when I run games on proton above 9.0, I started to have very bad lag when I touch the mouse, just move it(I tried to put different dpi on the mouse, didn't help). If I don`t touch the mouse, the cursor just rides on the screen. I don't know what to do, I didn't find such a problem on the internet, although I googled a lot and for a long time.
I have this problem in every game, regardless of system requirements. (I am currently trying to run The Forever Winter)

I have 2 card, nvidia and amd.
I use nvidia-proprietary for main card(gtx 1070)
And mesa fro amd.

Metro Awakening is borked so far

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 12:28

For the niche of a niche of a niche Linux VR enjoyers - Metro Awakening doesn't work at this moment. The crash seems to based on some popular error, so I hope it would be fixed after it's tomorrow release, by the smart people. I tried all popular Proton versions.

Glitched Steam menu

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 11:40

Hi everyone,
I installed Bazzite 40 a couple days ago, since I was interested by the project and wanted to use it also on another PC of mine as a HTPC solution. I encountered though that Steam, in Big Picture mode, has some glitches on the left menu (as you can see on the image). Now, those glitches occur only on that menu, Steam works perfectly fine with all its other components. I really don't know what could be causing this issue, and I haven't found (yet) another person with my same problem. I suspect it might be because of Nvidia and some graphics drivers, but it's weird that only that component of Steam glitches like that. My GPU (GTX 750Ti) is supported by the drivers, and with other distros (Pop!_OS) I don't have this problem. Tysm in advance for any help.

PS: if you believe that this post should have been made on another subreddit, please let me know. It's the first time that I make posts on Reddit asking for help, so if I could've (or should've) posted it somewhere else I'll remove it from here and put it elsewhere

Micro stutters while playing games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 06. November 2024 - 10:19

Using Linux mint and when I’m playing games I experience microstutters even after changing graphics drivers.

My graphics card is RTX 2060 paired with a Ryzen 5 3600 and 2*16GB DDR4 3000mhz RAM and is running on an nvme ssd.

This happens when playing videos as well.
