Other News about gaming on Linux

Just released the steam demo for my detective game. Made in ubuntu and includes a linux build.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 08:34

In Pixel P.I. you follow Pixel, a hacker detective reviewing past police cases for clues to a bigger mystery involving herself. She hacks the police database to obtain the suspects and witnesses' statements, but these statements are encrypted using advanced quantum methods. Luckily, these statements were encrypted together with their respective questions, so you can decrypt them by guessing what questions the police asked.

Pixel P.I. is a detective game, a unique hand-crafted narrative experience with the novelty of being able to understand language to interact with text written by the player. One of the game's main features is unlocking statements by typing questions.

The game starts with Pixel waking up in her room and realizing she can't remember the last two years. There's also someone else in the room with her she doesn't recognize, a robot called Ethan who claims they were crime-solving partners. Pixel doesn't trust him, but decides it's best to keep him around to try and learn about her recent past. On that note, she finds that the last entry on her notebook is a list of police case IDs. She decides to review these cases to understand why they were relevant to her.

How do I run EA App Games?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 07:14

Hi, I recently installed Linux Mint and all my Steam and Epic Games are working fine except for EA App games such as Battlefront 2 (which I got through Epic Games) or Sims 4. I followed the guideline outlined in this guide in order to install the EA App on Linux using Lutris's installer and run the app using wine-ge-8-26. However, I'm having 2 main issues with it. Note that I used The Sims 4 as my guinea pig game to test all the options.

1. Unable to run the actual game itself

After I installed the game, when I double-click on the game to run it (which should've worked as per the guide), it instantly fails to launch and I get the error:

Failed to launch game. An error on our end caused the launch to fail. Try again a little later.

Since that didn't work, I tried adding the executable (TS4_x64.exe) file of the game to Lutris in order to bypass the EA App and running it with the same wine version as before. Same error.

I tried changing the game's Wine runner to Proton-Experimental, and double-clicking it in Lutris. This started up the executable and no failure to launch game error showed up, but nothing actually happened. It was kinda just stuck there.

I added the executable to Heroic Game Launcher and ran it with GE-Proton-latest, but this caused an error saying:

Origin is not installed, and is required to play your game. Please reinstall Origin.

I don't really know where to go from here, but it feels like I'm on the cusp of the answer and I'm missing something obvious.

2. Messing with the EA App's wine runner makes it permanently useless

If I change the EA App's wine runner in Lutris to Proton-Experimental, it says "connecting to EA App," loads for a bit, and then just fails to launch. The kicker, though, is that when I changed it back to wine-ge-8-26, it still failed to launch, meaning I straight up could not launch the EA App at all anymore.

I tried launching the EA App executable (EALauncher.exe) with GE-Proton-Latest from Heroic Game Launcher, but this caused the app to prompt me for an update:

Background services crashed. The background services aren't responding, so we're kicking off the update manually. Stay put while we get the app up and ready for you.

However, whenever I click update, a command prompt comes saying "App already up to date, exiting now." 😐

The only way out of this loop for me was to completely delete the EA App and all of its contents (which include the games I installed) and then reinstall it (starting over from step 3 in the guide).

If anyone could please help with these, I'd greatly appreciate it. Just tryna play some BF2 😭🙏

Advice for converting my Windows PC to a Linux PC

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 07:04

I currently have a PC that has been running Windows 10 since I originally built it, but recently I've been wanting to switch over to Linux - to put it simply, Windows has been giving me a lot of issues, and with 10 dropping support very soon (and me REALLY not wanting to use 11 lol), I want to see about switching over to a version of Linux.

I haven't decided on a distro to use yet (but I am heavily considering SteamOS as I'm most familiar with it thanks to the Steam Deck), but I did want to ask about how I could go about running it. I know the process of booting into it via a USB and installing it that way, but I more specifically want to know about the best place to install it. My PC currently has three drives - the main 3TB HDD that Windows is installed to, a secondary 4TB HDD, and a single 1TB SSD.

The plan I'm currently considering is moving all of my important files off of my SSD and using that to install Linux. I wanted to be sure if that was a safe/viable option before I went through with it though. I am waiting a while before I go through with it, so I'm not in any rush for information on this, but any advice is appreciated!

Additionally, any good recommendations on distros other than SteamOS would also be great - I'm mainly considering SteamOS because it's one I have experience with.

Edit: Thanks for all the comments regarding the distros! I'll still keep an eye on SteamOS to see if it becomes more viable in the near future, but I'll consider Bazzite and Nobara in the meantime based on your suggestions!

Some additional info:

I mainly use my PC for 3D animation and video editing. I use Blender, which is already supported in Linux, and I've found alternatives to the video editor I currently use.

In terms of gaming, I largely play single player games. I do play multiplayer games on the rare occasion, but none of them are the kind that use anti-cheat

Specs:

CPU: Intel core i7-6700K 4GHz

GPU: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti

Ram: DDR4 16GB (planning on upgrading to 32GB in a couple months, which is when I'll be considering the switch to Linux - might as well kill 2 birds with one stone)

Thanks in advance!

Gaming on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 05:25

Hello guys, I'm a total beginner when it comes to gaming on Linux. Even referring to me as a noob could be seen as an insult to noobs, so I really need your assistance to help me through the process of installing the best Linux for gaming, what apps to use, and how to operate them.

My specifications are:

Ryzen 3600

Rx 5700xt Sapphire Pulse (I'm having some driver issues at the moment; it tends to crash occasionally)

3200 8*2 GB RAM 144Hz 1080p monitor

Starcraft 2 double tab number key for unit control groups camera centering not working

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 04:56

Also, what is even weirder is I though I could use the camera focus hotkey (CTRL + F) and remap it to the q key or something, but whenever I remap any key it always sets it to "numlock". When that is set to the camera focus key, whenever I hit any unit control group once, the camera jumps to it. It's really strange and I don't get it.

I am currently running battle.net and by extension starcraft 2 using steam and I tried a bunch of different proton versions, even proton 10-3 using proton GE. I am using steam because the battle.net installer would always fail using lutris.

Oh and I am using a normal keyboard with Englugh (US) layout.

Any ideas of what's going on?

edit: touble tap, not double tab.

edit: also, touble tapping other keys, like f10 for the menu, opens and closes it just fine. So the game seems to be registering the fast key strokes no problem.

Edit: the problem does not happen on Windows 11 (I dual boot Ubuntu and windows)

Zorin or Cachy?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 04:06

I will be building a new gaming PC soon and I will install Linux instead of Windows. I have settled on 2 options which are zorin and cachy. I chose zorin because of it's simplicity and very close look to windows, but my friend uses cachy and he says it's literally one of the best if not the best in gaming distros. So, my question is there really a big preformance difference in games between zorin and cachy because if not, like if the difference is just maybe 2 fps or something I will just use zorin but if the difference is worth it I will use cachy.

Also, what is the best distro (not only cachy and zorin) in office work because I also want a distro on my college laptop 😁

Highly custom build

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 02:49

So i built a PC into an xbox case on a budget and can't choose a distro. My setup is asrock deskmini a300 with ryzen2400g, ir has nvme ssd, 2 HDDs (one usb 2.0 one usb3.0). Using m2 wifi-> pcie riser i have connected GTX1660 Super. Power supply is xbox360PSU for the GPU and original deskmIni a300 for mobo. GPU PSU is started by CPU fan coolers voltage using optocoupler. Wifi is TPlink usb, Bluetooth is tp-link usb. I will want to run ps2 emulation+ steam games. i use dualsense/xone/switch pro controllers and i want them on bluetooth. I am also running a projector and a CRT from GTX1660s HDMI port (one at a time) so u wana be able to switch resolutuons and refresh rates. I tried bazzite before i had the Nvidia installed and had whitescreen issues. Did not try any distros after finishing the build, but all seems to work OK on windows 11 (Atlas playbook). I have issue on windows where my bluetooth gamepads keep bugging out and seem laggy (i suspect its software issues, i had some shitty chinese adapter before i bought a tplink, the chinese one probably left some sus drivers in the system). Anyways i see bazzite warns on nvidia support. I wish to use my build as a entertainment room game console, so preferably no mouse required. I would also like to run VNC+tailscale so its easy to navigate to youtube videos and so on by using my phone on the couch. Having syncthing on the packages would be great too, its alot better than sshfs for me.

My options seem like: nobara chimera bazzite batocera (probably not, i want steam to be of highest priority)

Here lies a question, which distro will provide best compat with my hardware. As for launching steam automatically and so on- i can figure that out, i used to work with linux alot and used to run a debian based distro for embedded Jetson device, so i know how to modify the system to some extent. I would just prefer to do least ammount of fiddling with drivers as that might take AGES :)) also i refuse to use gnome, if distro doesnt support any other DE its no-go.

System in question is in the pics, hope someone has a good suggestion :)

Weird controller mapping issues bazzite elite dangerous herioc epicgames wine-ge

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 01:48

Hi All, I'm looking for some pointers on how to solve a vexxing controller mapping issue in elite dangerous.
OS is a clean install of latest bazzite-nvidia, launching epicgames version of elite dangerous in wine-ge latest.

My dualshock3 is connected via USB cable. It maps just fine in linux, all buttons+axis test as correct.
In elite dangerous, start button is weirdly mapped to spacebar.
Right d-pad works in menus, but when I try to map it to game controls, the "press a button for this input" submenu just closes when I press d-pad right, implying there's some other keycode being sent along with the right-dpad input, maybe "esc", hence the window closing.
All other inputs and axis work perfectly.

I've also tried an ipega bluetooth gamepad, which again mapped fine in linux, but in elite the left analogue stick was mapped to volume up+down, at which point I gave up on that controller altogether.

I've googled this problem A LOT, really a lot.
I've tried older versions of wine, setting mappings as an environment variable, and deleting sections of registry that relate to dinput, all with no change, good or bad.

Issues with Battle.net Games - Mouse is not tracked, full screen wont work

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. Mai 2025 - 00:19

Hey all! I've recently been having some issues playing Hero's of the Storm (my true main game :0) and I've come to a dead end in my attempts to fix it. I'm fairly new to linux, so I'll do my best to supply the info I know, and will be happy to dig for more info if people request/tell me how haha.

The short version is that I've been able to play HotS just find ever since installing Linux over a year ago, simply by running Battle.net though Proton on steam. But recently (last month or two?) battle.net itself has been funky, and HotS as well. I found a few threads related to WoW (also through battle.net) but unfortunately nothing from those threads has helped me as of yet.

There are 2 major issues I'm facing now, which I show in the attached video.

First, you can see that my mouse is only read in the game if the game window itself is on the Left half of my monitor. So if the game is entirely on the left half, mouse works find. Game in the middle, only the left half of the game window is clickable, and game on the right, nothing is clickable. It seems to basically draw a line down the center of my monitor, and wont allow the mouse past that (In the game specifically, I can move to the desktop or other programs and everything works just fine.)

The second issue is that when I attempt to full screen it (windowed FS or not) I get a flickering, where it seems like the window is constantly re-sizing/changing resolution, like 10 times a second. Entering windowed full screen used to be how I played, and it always got me around the mouse issue.

I've reinstalled the game, tried a bunch of different versions of Proton, a few launch parameters in bnet suggested by other posts (which seems to do nothing, but prob a HotS issue, since the other post was for wow), I've tried using Xorg instead of Wayland.

As far as I know my drivers and everything are up to date (I use an AMD, so drivers are updated with OS)

I'm running:

  • KDE Plasma: 6.3.4
  • KDE Frameworks: 6.13.0
  • Qt: 6.8.3
  • Kernal: 6.11.0-25-generic (64-bit)
  • Graphics Platform: Wayland

If anyone has ideas or can help it would be oh so very much appreciated. HotS is like, my ONLY non negotiable game, and I'd really rather not break my year+ streak of not booting into my emergency windows drive haha

Thank you gamers!
