What Linux distro do you use for gaming (Steam, Minecraft, etc.)?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Juli 2025 - 16:39

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of switching to Linux or at least trying it in a VM before installing it on my main system. I'm mainly looking for something that has:

A good-looking and modern UI

Great performance for gaming (Steam, Minecraft/Lunar Client, etc.)

Easy setup for drivers and game launchers

Good support for Proton, Lutris, etc.

So far, I've heard good things about Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint. I'm curious what you use and recommend for gaming in 2025. Do you run into any problems with compatibility, performance, or updates?

Would love to hear your setups and any tips for someone coming from Windows. Thanks in advance!

Looking for playtesters on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Juli 2025 - 16:33

Hello there!

I'm Bastien, an indie dev working on game blending action roguelite and base defense that can be played solo or in co-operation (2 locale or up to 4 online).

I would love to see the game running on linux devices and I am currently looking for linux players to test the game and gather their feedback about how it is running and of course, how they feel about the game.

The game is called Kritter: Defend Together and I uploaded a Linux build of its demo yesterday on Steam.

I don't know if it's appropriate to link it directly as wel as the playtest survey, but if you feel like it, let me know :)

Kernel anticheat and Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Juli 2025 - 16:17

Does anyone know how kernel anticheat behaves in the native Steam client on Linux? I know it doesn't work the way it does in Windows because it doesn't access the Linux kernel. I'm asking more does it keep running/monitoring the computer even if the game is not running.

For reference, the motivation for this question is Easy AntiCheat and BlackCipher for The First Descendant, but the question is applicable to anything with kernel anticheat.

My Final hurtle

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Juli 2025 - 16:03

Hello. I have switched back and forth many times between Nobara and Windows 11 and the only thing that is keeping me from full time going to linux is one series of games, The carmen san diego games. I have them all via a program called Vilebox and when I install it via Lutris it does indeed install the games but if I try to switch the exe to say where in the world is carmen sandiego 3.0 it tells me it won't run unless it's in 256 colors and at least 640 x something I can't rememeber and just will not run. I have seen the Lutris script to run but it will not select the setup files ( even though I can plainly see them) and if I try to run it in Gnome Boxes yes it will start and run fine but the mouse moves at 10000% speed and if I turn the mouse all the way down to like 2% it will work kinda but it's so jerky.

With that said I really want to run Linux I love it tbh but I just need to pass this last hurdle to make it so I will post a link to Vilebox if anyone is willing to aid me in this pursuit as I have run out of ideas. Thank you so much for your time.

Gaming on Fedora

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 25. Juli 2025 - 15:09

Hey guys, new Linux user here, idk how and why but I wanted to try the Linux Experience so as a beginner I installed Fedora Workstation Wayland in my pc dual boot with win 11 pro.

My experience with fedora and everything so far so good, got all my drivers installed, my GPU is working properly, installed different extensions and all everything smooth.

Then I installed Steam and CS2 and my experience was HORRIBLE!! I was getting less than 70fps, whole game and menu is jittery. I didn't do any settings or anything just launched game thru steam coz idk tweakings or anything to do. Didn't try any other game that's why taking advice.

My drivers and everything are upto date, so it's not that issue. I need help with running game, also let me know how do I play non-steam games like the ones I have locally stored from Fitgirl repacks. I have heard Linux gives better performance in games than Windows so just want that experience. Thank you. Any advice or recommendations would be highly appreciated.
