Quest of Dungeons: roguelike dungeon crawler released version 4.0 Expansion

The Version 4.0 Expansion is now live for Quest of Dungeons on Steam - a big, free update.

Quest of Dungeons is a pixel-art roguelike dungeon crawler. The update adds the new mansion The Abyss, a Monsterpedia, Chinese language support and the switch from SDL2 to SDL3. On Linux this should make window handling (X11/Wayland) easier to maintain; it was tested on SteamOS, Ubuntu and Fedora.

Hi everyone!

Been a couple years! Here I am again with some new content, bug fixes and possibly brand new ones! It makes me happy to see that after all these years I still see some people playing the game once in a while.

For several months now I’ve been preparing an update with bug fixing, new features and new content!!

We’ve reached major version 4.0!! (12 years since launch)

This version was in public beta for a while for people to test, I’ve polished the stuff that was reported and it’s time to push live and fingers crossed!!

I’m releasing this new content for free, no extra DLC, but this involves a lot of work, so thank you for your patient and help in testing, to make sure stuff isn’t broken, new features are always trick, especially on a game that is already released for so long. So let me know if you encounter any game breaking issues.

TL;DR; Bigger changes: A new Mansion Abyss joins the other challenges.

Several more floors, enemies and ways to die!

Monsterpedia Track how many of which you defeated!

Chinese Simplified and Chinese Traditional language support With the help of Active Gaming Media, I added support for Chinese, both Simplified and Traditional, so font pixel support for both those 2 languages was also added.

Ok give me the long, what’s new?

  • Brand new Mansion (The Abyss) with some new sprites and enemies.
  • Added Monsterpedia on Leaderboards Menu (track how many of which you killed), this is new so even if you played a bunch there was never a way to track this before.
  • Can switch between keyboard/mouse and Gamepad at any time after booting game, just press a button on the KB/Mouse or Gamepad to continue your adventure.
  • When playing with a controller it detects which type and it will show correct PS4 or Xbox icons (thanks SDL3)
  • Added Chinese (Traditional) and Chinese (Simplified) languages
  • SDL2 -> SDL3 engine update, for Controllers and window handling (hopefully future-proofing new controllers and window handling on the desktop platforms). This is a big one but now allows us to do all the new gamepad stuff.
  • “Skull Key” is no longer sellable on Shop, preventing a “you did this to yourself” after defeating final boss we’d be locked out of final chest/Lantern
  • Fixed Fog of War taking a few seconds to show when entering a new floor
  • Fixed Level Up Particle System animating 2x per frame
  • Fixed Save file thumbnails getting corrupted in some systems
  • Fixed not localized button on Quests
  • Fixed mouse hover issues on a few UI elements
  • Japanese generated weapons names can be loaded in other languages after changing language now
  • Fixed issue with boot splash screen not allowing skipping in certain situations
  • Fixed a few cases of fonts getting blurred
  • Fixed issue where top corner minimap could get stuck in center (gamepad related)
  • Fixed a potential crash when enemies destroyed stolen items
  • Had to bump save version to 110 (backward compatible, but older versions can’t load new saves)
  • Re-implemented audio layer from OpenAL to SDL3_Mixer
  • Fixed memory leaks during Steam API usage
  • Fixed cross-platform cloud save sync (you can start playing on Windows and continue on a Steam Deck for example). Been testing on my Steam Machine, seems ok (last famous words)!
  • Linux: With the addition of SDL3 I hope it makes it more manageable for me handle window creation etc (x11/wayland) moving forward. I tested on SteamOS (Steam Machine), Ubuntu and Fedora.

Before anyone asks, there are NO new achievements. Don’t want to mess with 100%’s :)

Thank you for all the help and support, if you like the game don’t forget to tell your friends that Quest of Dungeons is a game to consider :)
