SteamVR has been released in version 2.18, improving streaming reliability, bringing the Steam Frame Aurora environment to the desktop and improving gamepad support in VR titles.
On Linux, there are fixes for async reprojection on AMD GPUs, GPU selection on systems with both discrete and integrated GPUs, and OpenXR games crashing on launch. The requirement for VK_KHR_maintenance_9 is also gone, so older graphics drivers work. USB tethered streaming is now supported on Quest as well.
Streaming (Steam Link):
- Streaming reliability improvements, including additional fixes for “Error 17”.
- Fixed ~300ms gaps in frame delivery in some packet-loss situations.
- Fixed colors being greyer than they should be when using certain AMD GPUs
- Fixed some causes of video corruption, checkerboarding, and stuck streams.
- Improved automatic bitrate selection.
- Expose eye openness information when streaming from Steam Frame, via OSC. This requires Steam OS 0.4.3, or higher). Eye openness will also be available in an upcoming OpenVR SDK release.
- Steam Frame: By default, Steam Frame controllers will now use gamepad input in VR games that do not support VR inputs. The preferred mode can be changed for any VR game in either the game’s Steam Input settings or in VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page.
- Quest: Add tethered streaming support over USB. Requires the latest version of the Steam Link app on Quest.
- Quest: Improved host framerate behavior when the HMD framerate is overridden at the OS level.
UX:
- Default environment is now the “Aurora” (can be disabled in settings)
- Added content-aware aurora color tinting, in theater environment
- System UI supports gamepad navigation
- Lesser-used UX controls moved to an “Additional Options” menu
- Game dimming while the dashboard is up can be disabled in settings
- Fix for keyboard not showing up when summoned in some scenarios (Skyrim VR)
- Fixed an issue where the dashboard would recenter unnecessarily for some users.
- Fixed Throttling Behavior setting selection in per-application Video Settings.
- Improved focus behavior when interacting with grab/resize handles
- Fixed an error when saving new bindings when an application does not have any default set
- Fix crashes at startup with certain games.
- Fix occasional crash when unblocking previously-blocked add-ons in VR settings.
Input:
- Fixed bindings not correctly recognizing some render model simulation values
- Fixed the Binding UI not displaying the correct default values for render model simulation type
- Fixed bindings missing when they were modified locally and then the Steam account was changed
- Fixed an issue that prevented controller bindings from loading for certain games, including Google Earth VR and Thumper.
Linux:
- Fixed async reprojection failing on AMD GPUs.
- Fixed GPU selection on systems with both discrete and integrated GPUs.
- Fixed compatibility with systems without systemd.
- Fixed game crash when an invalid texture size is submitted
- Fixed OpenXR games crashing on launch if SteamVR wasn’t already started
- Removed requirement for VK_KHR_maintenence_9 on Linux to allow for compatibility with older graphics drivers
