Stuttering when games are running below refresh rate

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 17:36

Hi Y'all

I'm running Fedora 40 with KDE6. 7900XTX and a 7800X3D. I do have an issue that whenever a game is under my refresh rate it kinda has some stuttering. Let's say I play Elden Ring which is capped at 60FPS on a 75FPS monitor, I get microstuttering. When I change the monitor refresh rate to 60 I don't have this issue.

I did think that this might be this issue but I'm running an RDNA3 GPU, not an RDNA2 GPU which this issue affects (I assume it's bound to RDNA2).

How is using Content Manager for Assetto Corsa on Linux? Is there any issues with CSP or joining servers I should know about?

Random freezes

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 16:05

I recently just got into Linux after using Windows my whole life.

I installed a fresh version of popOS And everything went smoothly I installed steam and installed some other games. But I have this problem where when I'm playing any game it will randomly just freeze and I have to restart my PC.

No keyboard inputs work I already tried Ctrl alt f3 and everything similar it just hard freezes my system.

This has been going on for a week now and it's really annoying because of how random it is.

I can play with my friends fine then randomly freeze have to restart then it will just freeze right when I get in the game.

Only thing I feel helps is if I just sit at my desktop for 5 minutes until I open a game.

Any help what should I do?

EU4 very slow on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 15:07

Basically the title,

I switched from windows a month ago and the game is noticeably slower, I use the same mods I did on windows, I'm running the game natively, but there is no considerable difference with proton experimental.

Game is installed on an SSD, heavier games Like Arma 3 run like butter.

I also run the game using Linux Gamemode. (gamemoderun %command% in launch options)

How do i make the game run faster?

I use Xorg

one month in 1653 takes 6.18 seconds on speed 5 for reference, sometimes more.

Full Tickless (nohz_full) Kernel and CPU Isolation for Gaming

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 13:56

Hey folks,

I just finished my Arch setup with:

  • CachyOS + sched_ext
  • scx_lavd (big thanks to u/htejun , u/ptr1337 , u/multics69 and u/Byte_Lab for doing a great job here!)
  • X11 (root mode) + KDE (no composition)
  • Disabled CPU mitigations
  • Disabled Watchdogs etc. etc.

Next I would like to have a look into CPU isolation for gaming.
I know that I need to set nohz_full=1-9 to tell the kernel not ticking my last 9 cores (I guess RCU Callbacks are set properly then as well rcu_nocbs=?), but I'm struggling to setup my housekeeping core (0) properly with systemd and running the process in the right cgroup.

To move IRQs I'm using:

# Migrate irqs to CPU 0 for I in $(ls /proc/irq) do if [[ -d "/proc/irq/$I" ]] then echo "Affining vector $I to CPUs 0-6" echo 0 > /proc/irq/$I/smp_affinity_list fi done

I guess I can automate that step later with a proper irqbalance config and the systemd service.

Now the part I'm struggling with:
To move the processes to the housekeeping core I tried part 3.1 of this guide, in plain sysfs.
I guess it worked for the kernel threads but not for the processes and I have the feeling it's systemd controlling the processes' cgroups.

So I tried to move all processes to core 0 by using:

systemctl set-property system.slice --runtime AllowedCPUs=0 systemctl set-property init.scope --runtime AllowedCPUs=0 systemctl set-property user.slice --runtime AllowedCPUs=0

But now if I want to create a new slice for steam, wine or proton it's being created under user-1000.slice which is part of user.slice.

Does anybody have experience with CPU isolation for gaming and some more ideas?

Processing Vulkan Shaders. What does it actually mean?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 13:42

So many times, usually the first launch of a game in Steam it will first give a window of processing vulkan shaders. And that can take a really long time for some games, like 45 min easily.

And with CSGO2 I also noticed it again, but I never let it finish because I just wanted to play and I had an option to skip it. But what does that even mean? And does it not matter if I skip it? does it change visuals of a game in any way? Like will the game look better if I do let it finish?

Which DE to pick?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 13:13

So, I've more or less settled on using CachyOS as distro, though it offers many DE, in which I know KDE is a safe choice. I do wonder how good would behave UKUI, or what impact it can have on framerate in gaming. Or on everyday use.

Homeworld gameplay opinion

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 14. Mai 2024 - 11:24

So i've just installed Homeworld 3.
Its been 21 years and yet no worthy replacement of the masterpiece that is homeworld..

While the 3d navigation seems to be more intuitive now i cannot feel like some depth of tactical decisions have been stripped from this one.

  • you cannot store fighter wings in you carriers to protect them from flack
    -run and gun is gone

-the pathing is suspiciosly 2d (in the same plane), and your units colide with objects in the environment.
-ships roles seem to not matter so much.

Is it just me? I am looking now at some other titles worthy of space combat rts. Are there any?

distro: Garuda (arch) / nvidia3060 64gb ram overall the games runs great and flawlessly perfomance wise.
