Deleted Windows 11 and moved to Arch

14. Mai 2024 - 04:26

Hey all. I've been following linux for a while, tried committing to it a couple times and never fully committed, but I gave in to my compulsive thoughts and wiped my windows install and installed arch! The arch wiki was a great guide and I definitely had someone helping me through the install lol, but its done now and I'm rocking KDE! I've been following linux news and peeping this sub for a while so hopefully this is a fun experience :)

I did have an issue though. I installed arch to my 500G Sata SSD but I also have a 2TB nvme in my system that I specifically want to install games too. I thought I configured the drive correctly in the KDE partition manager but when I tried installing games to it with steam, it sees the drive as an "external drive" and spits back a "disk write error".

Does anyone have experience with installing an extra storage drive in their system and know the best way to do this? I'm still a bit of a noob but if anyone has any tips/pointers or maybe knows where to direct me in the arch wiki that'd be great :)

Strange CS2 mouse behavior

14. Mai 2024 - 04:10

Trying out Linux for gaming. So far every single player game I've tried works great. And Halo MCC has given me no grief with regards to weird issues. However my favorite FPS has been a bit of an annoyance to get working right. I think I've resolved the Graphics stuttery-ness that I was having with the launch options in this post(https://www.reddit.com/r/linux\_gaming/comments/wdjpq2/csgo\_launch\_options\_for\_amd\_hardware/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button)

However I am still having weird issues that I haven't seen documented else where. I would like to see if any of you have experienced similar issues, before going through the trouble of getting some input capture software so I can dig down into what the cause is.

There are two main issue's both regarding the mouse.

Seemingly at random I switch to Pistol, I am not using the scroll wheel on the mouse nor am I pressing 2 on the keyboard.

Also seemingly at random (AKA the worst time) I will fire, and nothing will happen, and I need to unpress the Lmb and repress it. Sometimes this lasts a few seconds, and I'll be furiously clicking away aiming at someone, or swing a corner and try to spray only to stand there with my dick in my hand, and just watch them own me. This is very frustrating (except when I have it happen and I still win the fight then, the handicap is just a ego boost) and I would like to find a resolution before I continue with my Premier grind.

I do have two monitors so I thought that that could've been the cause. But I do not see the cursor move to the other monitor, but maybe it is and is just invisible.

I do have the game on full screen, but even then when in menus It doesn't capture the mouse, and I can freely switch between monitors, which did not happen on windows.

Also mods I didn't read a single bit of your rules so feel free to remove this and tell me to go fuck myself if this type of post isn't allowed :)

Stop steam from creating desktop icons by default?

14. Mai 2024 - 03:41

I don't believe it used to, but Steam now automatically creates desktop icons for games when I install them. Even turning off the checkboxes and fully installing a game, the next game I try to install has them ticked again

Hellos, I'm using arch in my systems and Crash: It's about time has been... crashing...

13. Mai 2024 - 23:21

I got 3 systems
Ryzen CPUs (3600, 5800X3D), and a intel Tiger lake 1135g5
1 has a Geforce 4080
1 has a Radeon 6700XT
1 has the iGPU Xe

oddly enough it is the Radeon system on linux giving me a rough time. when the game launches it crashes with a "FATAL ERROR" message and boots me out to the desktop.

It worked fine on a Bazzite install, but I prefer arch since I've gotten extremely comfortable with it already running it in other multiple systems.

Anyone here has had luck running Crash 4 on a RDNA2 system?
I run CachyOS, it's been absolutely flawless in everything else, just this particular game on this particular system, with this particular GPU (Radeon 6700XT)

A bit of a PSA in regard to Lampray MM for BG3

13. Mai 2024 - 23:10

So, I've been on a hot journey to get mods to work with BG3. I initially started trying to get BG3MM to work with Lutris, but the best I could do was get the MM to run, but not load or export mods. Then, I discovered Lampray with some help from this sub. After several hours worth of work and getting most of my mods redownloaded, I finally figured out how to get them to load successfully.

So, here's the PSA part:

When you run Lampray and set the folder locations, you might think you need to start at /home/.steam/etc... Even though this does get you to the appropriate folders, they're actually not the correct folders. I discovered the folders Lampray needs are the same folders Steam uses when you right-click > Manage > Browse Local Files from within Steam. These locations have you start from /home/.local/share/steam/etc.

I only discovered this by trial and error. The other location does work, but not 100%. Lampray would show all the mods getting loaded, but BG3 wouldn't use them all. Not until I pointed Lampray to the same folder locations accessed via Steam.

So, you want: home/.local/share/steam/steamapps/...

Not: home/.steam/steam/steamspp/...

I hope this helps clarify things for others who are wanting to mod the heck out of BG3, too!

ARK: Survival Evolved is horribly dying due to memory leak

13. Mai 2024 - 20:35

This post outlines my exact problem with the game, but its for ASE. I've tried switching proton versions from experimental down to 8.0-5 and also playing around with mod configurations etc.

This is the start of the proton log:

====================== Proton: 1714418284 proton-9.0-1 SteamGameId: 346110 Command: ['/home/joemama/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ARK/ShooterGame/Binaries/Win64/ShooterGame_BE.exe'] Options: {'forcelgadd'} depot: 0.20240415.84603 pressure-vessel: 0.20240415.0 scout scripts: 0.20240415.0 sniper: 0.20240415.84603 sniper 0.20240415.84603 Kernel: Linux 6.8.9-arch1-2 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue, 07 May 2024 21:35:54 +0000 x86_64 Language: LC_ALL None, LC_MESSAGES None, LC_CTYPE None Effective WINEDEBUG: +timestamp,+pid,+tid,+seh,+unwind,+threadname,+debugstr,+loaddll,+mscoree ======================

and from then on its a few errors and dumps, followed by

2363.341:0138:0248:fixme:dbghelp_msc:codeview_snarf nested function 2363.341:0138:0248:fixme:dbghelp_msc:codeview_create_inline_site Couldn't find type 80100002 in IPI stream

To me it seems as if this has been kicked off by a software error since both my storage and RAM is good, and this happens consistently with this game in particular. Around line 19500 is where it starts in the log

I'd be thankful for any insight ppl can provide!!

Multiple games crashing at the end of the launch screen Arch Linux, Steam

13. Mai 2024 - 20:21

Since a few days some games (CS2, Apex Legends, No Man's Sky and Townscaper just to name a few) won't start properly anymore through Steam. While in CS2 I am able to start the game it crashes just before finishing the startup animation. It is somewhat similar with Apex and the other games crashing after starting the "welcome menu" just after the boot animation. Does someone know what might be causing this or is experiencing similar issues?

Steam - using volume and brightness keys, alt-tabbing causing games to stop recognizing keyboard input/frozen desktop environment. Anyone else? Any fixes?

13. Mai 2024 - 20:17

I'm on Arch with an NVidia RTX 3060 mobile, Intel core i7 3.6ghz.

Games that this occurs with are Fallout 3, Fallout 4, GTA 3, GTA San Andreas, Let it Die, RetroArch, and Celeste. These are all the games I have installed through steam. This doesn't happen with games I've installed and run with Lutris. I've tried using Proton experimental, 9.0-1, 8.0-5 and 6.3-8, all have the same behavior. Other versions of Proton do not work for all or some of those games. This has only started happening within the last week.

Using GNOME Wayland primarily, but I've also tried and confirmed that the behavior is the same GNOME on Xorg, Xfce4, Cinnamon and Openbox.

When in game, if I use the brightness or volume control buttons on my keyboard, or try to alt-tab to another window, the game will stop receiving/responding to keyboard input. Alt-tabs fail about 80% of the time and do not switch to another window or bring up the window switcher menu. I cannot Alt-F4 to close the game, or use the super key to open whatever menu might appear for whichever DE/WM.

I can switch TTYs and kill the game or Steam that way, but the DE/WM does not become responsive again, and forcing a reboot by holding the power button on the machine results in corruption to the file system on root partition, which has been able to be repaired by fsck, though I'd like to not try that again.

I've rolled back my system to every snapshot I have saved (I make a snapshot before everyone pacman update and keep up to 15 of them, so usually they span 15 days), but the behavior stays the same, probably because steam updates when launched.

I can just not use the brightness and volume buttons, and not Alt-Tab out of the game and everything goes fine. Nothing crashes while playing. It's just really annoying to have to quit out of the game to adjust volume or do something else for 30 seconds before launching the game again.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Anyone have a fix for this? I don't even really know where to start trying to fix it, but it seems like it's a problem with Steam itself, considering that it happens on Wayland and Xorg and across multiple DE/WMs.

Run away from NVIDIA like the plague

13. Mai 2024 - 20:13

I don't care about whatever "never had issues with nvidia on linux" grifters tell you

NVIDIA has always been openly hostile towards Linux and they never made a move to help us unless they got a buck off of it in some way

Made a new build with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Its a day and night kind of difference, "had some problems but nothing major" turn into "i never had any problems use it as you see fit"

AMD drivers are also included in-kernel and AMD is set to absolutely annihilate NVIDIA in the next years

I just deleted Windows 10

13. Mai 2024 - 18:56

\o/ Dear community, please celebrate with me! \o/

I've been using my Desktop as a dual boot system with Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 10 for quite a number of years. Work was strictly confined to Ubuntu, gaming was strictly confined to Windows 10. And so it was meant to be forever. But then I got a Steam Deck for Christmas 2023 and this changed my life so much, it's not even funny.

I was totally blown away that all of this was working under Linux. I couldn't believe it because I tended to think that I was quite well-informed on the topic of PC gaming. Seeing the Steam Deck in action, however, was like discovering a hidden layer of reality that I never had managed to detect because Digital Foundry had never mentioned it before. That made me think. If it worked that well on that little Steam Deck, it might also work quite well on my gaming rig? And so over Christmas, I slowly began adapting my Ubuntu system to be ready for gaming primetime.

I began by

  • installing more up-to-date Nvidia drivers, updating the Kernel and configuring them correctly
  • quarantining my work-related stuff so gaming would not interfere (still easily accessible in a few clicks though)
  • installing Steam, gamemode, MangoHud, some version of gamescope, Heroic launcher
  • getting familiar with Wine and Proton, alternative engines via Luxtorpeda, etc.
  • and eventually moving over my games one game/disk at a time

After the first couple of success stories, I also somehow began to rediscover Linux itself, spend some time learning what was going on under the hood, customizing Ubuntu to my heart's content and really make it my own. This I would never have done if I had kept it just as a "get my work done" system. I was so much happier simply turning this thing on, it's kind of ridiculous.

Finally, about one month in, I was pretty much happy with gaming (and of course working) on Linux. The only thing I hadn't tested was VR, and out of maybe a few dozen non-VR games, only 2 of them did not work (looking at you Flashpoint Operations Red Storm and Flashpoint Operations Southern Storm). I finally reshuffled all my data on my disks to run on ext4 partitions (I had originally started by simply mounting my NTFS gaming partitions, which worked quite well all things considered). All I kept where two remaining Windows 10 partitions (system + recovery) - just in case I needed them.

I continued testing more and more games, buying and playing also new games on Steam after a quick check on protondb.com, and after testing what must have been more than 150 games over a number of weeks I was in general a happy camper. Aside from the two games mentioned above I did come across a few problematic cases, but eventually I managed to get every single one of those running without any huge problems as well.

So now it's been almost half a year and today I realized: I haven't booted my Windows system in more than 2 months. So those 2 games that didn't work turned out not to be a decisive factor. I still haven't tested VR with my Quest 3, but I'm pretty sure that stuff will work eventually and I can wait until that day comes. And then I thought about some of the older games I managed to get running on Linux. Things like Drakan and Nascar Racing 4 and Dangerous Waters and Sentinel Returns and Swat 4 and Messiah and quite a few other old things that I had lying around on a disc somewhere and which totally would not run without any tinkering on Windows as well.

And so I said: good enough, what am I waiting for? I finally deleted the Windows 10 partitions for good, reclaimed that space for my system and now I am running Ubuntu exclusively. It feels amazing!
I just wanted to share my little story, maybe it helps to motivate some people to also try and get gaming on Linux set-up properly. And I wanted to thank everyone in this community. It was such a valuable resource when I was learning all the ins and outs or hit some snag that I finally managed to overcome thanks to the concentrated knowledge of all you people.

Best regards,
the_korben
