My question is how is Linux proton handling newer windows based games ?

I really want to switch back to Linux and drop kick windows as far as humanly possible but what is stopping me is space marine 2 and playing with friends

So please give your thoughts and issiues with proton ect ect

Not sure where to post this, thought this might be a good starting point. My system specs/configuration:

OS: NixOS 24.05.20240323.44d0940 (Uakari) x86_64

Host: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. WS C246 PRO

Kernel: 6.6.22

Resolution: 2560x1440 (60 Hz), 2560x1440 (165 Hz)

DE: Hyprland (Wayland)

CPU: Intel i9-9900K (16) @ 5.000GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER

Memory: 4845MiB / 15858MiB

So sometimes, when I'm playing BG3, it will completely freeze my system. I'll just be playing regularly, and then suddenly it starts to grind to a halt quite quickly. In my mangohud, I'll see the frame times go to 850ms, it will play a few more frames, and play the audio in very short, chopped up parts. My system will turn completely turn unusable at this point. I think that for instance hotkeys will register but be handled as soon as the system is no longer locked up.

Coming to that, the system will continue after about 20 minutes (not every time, usually I would just press the reset button on my case so I don't have many data points of this, last time it happened I went for a walk and when I came back my system was back "online"), after which I can just continue to use the system normally, though both steam AND bg3 will have crashed (I can just restart them no problem though).

I'm currently playing it through Proton-GE-9.4, but I've also played on Proton-Experimental and Proton-8.0. I'm launching with these options (just copied from ProtonDB from someone with nvidia GPU with a similar generation one):

env --unset SDL_VIDEODRIVER PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 DXVK_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr,dxr11 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 mangohud %command% --skip-launcher --vulkan

Vulkan or DXVK makes no difference either. I do not run into this with any other games, cyberpunk 2077, for instance, runs fine all the time.

From the logs it looks like some process either has a memory leak or just goes completely rogue with memory usage.

In my journalctl, a lot of logs occur (what stands out to me is the discord app blocking, I will now try to play without discord turned on, see what that does). System seems to recover after about 20 minutes (wasn't there to see though). Not sure how I can best show the log, because it's about a thousand lines spewed out in a quite short time.

I downloaded FNV gog edition but what i got was not the game itself but one installer and two big .bin files.
Then, I added the installer .exe file to Steam and did the proper stuff for it to run (I did exactly what is said here) but the installer is not shown. When I click the 'play' button it gets blue for an instant and then goes back to green and does nothing.

¿Can somebody help me?

I ran into a strange problem, any game I run in bottles works with mouse and keyboard no problem but will not register any inputs from a game pad. Native Linux games like openmw or emulators work just fine with the controller.

I am using the flatpak version of bottles and the controller I am using is an 8Bitdo Ultimate. I get the same problem with any other controller I use.

If anyone else has ran into a similar issue i would like to know how you solved it.

I tried with the GOG version of the game, I can install it but when it launchs in gaming mode pops an error about registry. Is an usual error in windows, in fact happened to me years ago and it's easy to solve, but I am unable to make it work on Steam Deck. I tried to launch regedit using protontricks for the game's .exe, but I cant find the same directory on registry because simply it don't shows what it says ''[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Codemasters\Race Driver 3]'', the Codemasters folder don't exist there.

Game when it lauchs says: Registry Error, Please Check Installation.

So I'm here wondering if some of you was able to play that game by any other method or if I'm doing something wrong, didn't found anyone on the internet playing it on Steam Deck.

I recently replaced Windows 10 with Bazzite 39 on my desktop but I am getting a really weird audio/video issue. I'm not sure what to even call this issue to look it up.

If anyone has ran into this issue before though or knows how I might be able to solve it I would appreciate any help.

I'm going to try installing Bazzite 40 to see if it fixes the issue (also because I didn't know changing the Global Theme would prevent me from returning to the original Bazzite theme).

I had issue with stuttering since 2.0 update and i've recently learnt that if i launch the gave without using GOG Galaxy, but with it running in the background i no longer suffer from stuttering. From my short tests it seems that cloud saving and DRM blocked DLC's are working with this method, but it does not add your playtime to leaderboards also not sure if achievements works since i've most of them and only one i am missing are either from the expansion (which i do not own currently) or hard to get with my current save (max stat or doing 100% district).

Hi, so I have NVIDIA RTX 2060 in my pc, I installed drivers for it in multiple distros(EndeavourOS, Debian, Fedora, Manjaro). Minecraft produced a lot of black flickering a bit less after turning the v-sync in minecraft on but it still was flickering. Then I tried playing Apex Legends and the game was extremely lagging. Also when I tried using X11 it worked nicely. Then I did that on Debian and minecraft was running smoothly but youtube videos were lagging. Any ideas how to fix that?

The game won’t launch. I only get this message. I tried changing to Proton experimental, no luck. This is in ”Steam native”. ”Steam runtime” won’t launch.

How do I fix this?

Use my rig mostly for gaming, have one running well right now, how practical would it be to cease auto updates so no libraries get changed until I’m done with this game..?

Hello guys. I have been having this problem for a while now, that i really wanted to see if i could get fixed. So i have a laptop with the following specs:

Hp Pavillion Gaming Laptop a-16
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 TI
intel i7 10th gen processor
OS: Pop_OS!
RAM: 8GB

The problem is the following: i have the following monitor distribution (joined displays):

1(secondary) | 2(primary)

When i launch any game via steam, the game starts up on monitor 1. So, i move it to monitor 2 via SHIFT+SUPER+RIGHT ARROW, which works. But the mouse keeps being captured by screen 1, so then i cant move the mouse at all on the game window. Here is a screenshot of the issue:

I have tried looking for many threads, but i wasn't sure if those really apply to my case. Can anyone give me any tips on how can i solve this? Or any way that i can make the game initialize on the primary monitor?

I am running POP_OS and on occasion the system will boot into emergency mode, after 1 to 2 reboots it always boots fine. What is the best way of finding what is causing the issue? I have tried to use journalctl but there is so much data to sift through that I am not sure what I am looking for.

I have played Star craft for years on Linux, but recently I had to do a reinstall and can't get it to work anymore. All the installation processes I found seem to be outdated.

For example with proton the setup.exe (both for star craft directly and for the blizzard launcher) crashes, Lutris didn't work for me either.

Does someone know a way to make this work?

Looking at the Wayback Machine archive for the Steam survey in August 2018, the month that Proton officially launched, the three-way split OS split had macOS at 2.66%, Linux at .49% and Windows at 96.77%. The current April 2024 Steam survey Steam survey has macOS at 1.35%, Linux at 1.90% and Windows at 96.76%

All the growth that Linux has experienced in this survey to date didn't come from Windows, it came for macOS. But as Apple has moved to their own silicone and other things, this drop off in macOS on Steam was more than predictable, it was inevitable. I doubt this means that many macOS gamers just stopped gaming on macs, they went elsewhere for games.

And while the Windows market share has remained stable, Windows gamers have a lot more options for games now than in August 2018, most notably EGS and Game Pass. Neither of these stores existed in August 2018 and no matter how one views them individually, without question they are drawing a decent sized group of Windows gamers away from Steam. Not entirely, but at least some of the time as opposed to none at all when neither of these stores exited.

I believe Linux is likely overrepresented on the Steam survey as Steam is the only officially supported Linux game store and that much of its growth is related to macOS and Windows gamers playing more on other stores and that Linux growth really isn't much at all.

I get it from a Linux gaming fan perspective thinking that advancements with Proton, the Deck and other Linux gaming achievements in last six years, make Linux more attractive to gamers. Windows 11 has its issues, but gaming on it on modern hardware has been very solid. It's flat out much better than Linux is on this kind of stuff. I know things are coming along in this space, especially HDR. But just can't constantly lag in support for the newest stuff if it is to experience real, tangible real growth.

Hello I am playing RDR2 in steam deck using heroic games launcher. I would love to use trainer on single player mode and STL has stopped working for a while now... Cheat deck also doesn't work for this, can someone tell me if there is a way? Thank you...

I downloaded all the necessary files and tried to install it via both Lutris and Heroic, using wine-ge 8.26, wine 9.7, and even proton-9. None of them work. It just throws in the following error:

Any idea as to how I can fix this? I've tried rehashing the torrent, everything showed fine.

I'm using Arch btw, with KDE

I tried to add a steam library to my HDD which is mounted on /mnt/data. when i run steam via the console and look at the logs i get the error that it has permission issues. I have give the steam folder that i want it in all permissions and set it to my user.

What do i need to change in the permissions to fix the issue.
