Steam Machine and Steam Frame: verified compatibility program launched

Valve has expanded its “Verified” compatibility program to two new devices: Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both launching this summer.

The Steam Machine is a SteamOS PC for the living room - roughly six times more powerful than the Steam Deck - running the same software stack (SteamOS, Steam UI, Proton). Verification requirements are nearly identical to the Steam Deck: games already verified there need no additional work. The Steam Frame is primarily designed for high-performance game streaming, but can also run SteamOS games standalone, including VR titles.

The update to SteamOS 3.7.15 for the Steam Deck has been released in the “stable"-channel. Among other things, experimental Wake-on-Bluetooth support for Steam Deck LCD has been reactivated, including support for LE peripherals. This means that it should now be possible to wake up the Steam Deck with an Xbox controller, for example.

The long-awaited update to SteamOS 3.4 (incl. hotfixes 3.4.1 and 3.4.2) for the Steam Deck was released today in the “stable” channel. Unfortunately, besides all the nice improvements, there is also a less nice change: hardware de- and encoding (for video streams) has been disabled with this update. This means that, for example, streaming FROM or TO the Steam Deck is now done exclusively in software (with corresponding effects on the CPU and battery). If and when this change will be reversed is currently unknown.
