Steamdeck beginner

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 14:47

I'm wanting to get a steam deck but have no idea which model to go for. I want to have good performance but also don't want to be spending a fortune on a console. I heard you can customise the storage and everything, is this true? If so, which model would be best for me?

Unable to launch V Rising through (GE) Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 14:32

Steam is installed with `dnf install steam` (so it's not a flatpak).

Nvidia drivers work without issues.

I can play games that have native Linux support - for example, Blasphemous and Turok.

Logs and tech info: github gist.

I tried with Proton Experimental (various beta versions too), Proton 9.0 (Beta), Proton 8.0-5 and GE Proton 9-4 (latest atm).

V Rising can run through Proton Experimental on Steam Deck.

I had error logs about missing `libcrypto.so.1.1` and `libnvidia-pkcs11.so.550.54.15` but I solved that with sym-link/copy to the path Steam looks for it.

If there's anything else needed, let me know.

Poor performance in some games

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 14:30

As the title says, I'm getting poor performance in a few games. These games in particular are Spider-Man remastered, and Miles Morales.(Dodi and fg crack)

My setup : (laptop GPU : RTX 3060 Cpu : Ryzen 7 5800H 16GB ram OS : Nobara

Added these 2 games to steam. Running using proton-experimental. Tried proton Ge.

Both games run. But the problem is, I'm getting around 30-40fps lesser than I do on windows. On windows I usually get around 90-110fps, but on linux I'm getting only around 50-60fps.

Help.

Thanks in advance.

Any game which you can't run in m$ bloatware but can run in Linux? For me, Jade empire, might & magic vii(cd), sacred 1 and far cry 2.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 14:11

Many people talk about games which cant run in linux. I wanna now the opposite, just by curiosity. Might and magic vii for blood and honor was my first rpg. I can run the gog version in m$ spyware no problem but my cds wouldn't run. Jade empire is another example. The steam version runs flawsly in linux and cant run in windows. Diablo 1 and 2 too.

In general this only happens with very old games.

Linux runtime 3.0 Sniper. Content file locked error.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 12:40

I was trying to run some games on my laptop and for some reason this particular runtime refuses to load and throws this error. It is installed on the same game drive as the rest of my games (files are there, I checked). Verifying its files does nothing because it doesn't recognise that they exist, and I also can't uninstall it and reinstall for the same reason.

Sometimes when clicking the retry button on Steam downloads tab it says "Missing download files".

Any input on this matter is appreciated.

Are the default kernel/mesa GPU settings tuned for maximum power/performance?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16. April 2024 - 11:40

When you install your GPU drivers/software on Microsoft Windows (i.e. AMD Radeon), you get the Adrenaline software which lets you tweak all sorts of features of the GPU. For example, you can:

  1. set the gaming experience (HYPR-RX, Quality, HYPR-RX Eco, AAA Smart Technology, etc.).
  2. control features like Radeon Anti-Lag, Image Sharpening, and Virtual Super Resolution.
  3. apply tuning presets (i.e. Quiet, Balanced, Rage, etc.) which controls power/performance characteristics.

These settings can make a significant difference in gaming FPS in addition to the in-game graphics settings.

Since we don't have the Adrenaline software on Linux, I'm wondering:

  1. am I getting the full performance of my GPU with the default mesa/kernel settings on Linux?
  2. is there any other GPU related software I should be installing to get maximum gaming performance?
  3. if I tune everything in Windows, do those settings persist when I boot into Linux?
