Advice on switching from Nvidia to AMD

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 19:57

I've gotten fed up with Nvidia's BS when it comes to Linux and the pain of their drivers. I've been looking particularly at a 7900 XT and I want to know if it's well supported in linux or if there are other better alternatives. I'm coming from a 3060 so I would like any suggested GPUs to be more powerful.

I have no use for nvidia specific features so I'm not exactly losing anything going from Nvidia to AMD.

Also, I know AMD's drivers are built into the kernel itself but is there any specific drivers I need for gaming or will AMDGPU suffice?

Raving about 8BitDo Ultimate

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 19:30

TLDR if you're in the market for a gaming controller I cannot recommend the 8BitDo Ultimate enough.

I got this controller a week ago and it has blown me away so much I feel the need to come gush about it here. First of all, it does work out of the box on Linux contrary to a few posts I've seen here. I plug the dock which has the dongle inside via USB and it connects immediately, out the box. Besides that though, I need to rave about what I've come to discover about the controller for its price point. The performance is astonishing, in terms of input latency and response time. It made me realize the Xbox controller I was using before had me compensating for latency, the Ultimate has 4ms average according to XInputTest when wireless (which works with WINE btw.) 4ms on a non-overclocked wireless $70 controller is insane, pro tier performance. No other controller that has hall effect sticks is as accurate/responsive besides the Vader 3 Pro, which I do not recommend...I've ordered 3 and returned them all because the sticks came with deadzones and QC issues. I also tried the 8BitDo Pro 2 after hearing great things, but the input latency was a dealbreaker, I was missing jumps in Mario. Ultimate really lives up to its name in my experience, it could be $150 and I believe would still be worth the price.

Stardew Valley starts but flashes

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 18:53

Good morning guys! I have just installed Nobara and after installation everything is ok. I can't getStardew valley to run properly though. The game starts but always flashes as you can see in the video. What does it depend on? I'm trying to run it with Lutris (selecting both Wine and proton) and also adding it to non steam games via steam play. Unfortunately the result is the same What’s to do?

r2modman not working on bookworm debian

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 17:44

Basically the title. I use the appimage, it doesn't work, I use the .deb file, I think it installs but crashes every time I open it (can't check which it was right now).

Is this a me-specifically problem or a known problem, and if it's a known problem is it a "sucks but can't do anything :/" problem or a "hey you need to do this to fix it" problem? Is there an alternative to r2modman that works on debian? I wanna play modded lethal company and stuff lol

I'm in the car right now so I can't produce bug reports or anything until in a few hours but I'll forget to post this if I wait so I'm gonna do it now. Basically posting on the off chance that this is a wide known issue with a fix that can just be named off the top of somebody's head.

Bazzite Troubles

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 16:55

Installed Bazzite on my desktop and I forgot to set up a user profile and now I can't get in. Is there a default that the OS uses when you're as dumb as me?

Bazzite NVIDIA Build GDE Config

It's installed on its own SSD so its not the end of the world but I'd really like to not have to reinstall it if necessary lol.

[Guide] How to solve Dualsense connection and detection issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 16:29

After many game sessions that I couldn't use my controller through bluetooth, I've found this tips through some obscure searches.

  1. Doesn't reconnect after a successful connection:
add kernel parameter "btusb.enable_autosuspend=0" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX

  2. Connected but not working:
Downgrade bluez to version 5.68, any version after that makes the controller unusable. Also, make sure to version-lock it so it doesn't update. Look up how to do this in your distro.

Hope it helps.

Sega Rally 1 & 2 on Steam Deck?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 16:08

Anyone have any idea how to run the PC versions of Sega Rally 1 & 2 on Steam Deck? I got the files from myabandonware, but not sure how to get them to run. I got Sega Rally Revo running fine though. Do I have to use Lutris or can they be run standalone?

Osu and playback issue

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 15:20

So i recently download OSU and from the AUR. While i was playing with my friend and i discovered that i can't play other music (for example previewing a map or just playing regular audio file using mpv, youtube playback isn't working etc.) but osu audio is working. I saw that in pavoucontrol osu isn't displayed anywhere. I did install pipewire-pulse but again the playback isn't working. The issue persists until i stop OSU. Also sometimes when i start OSU there's no audio from the game.

Has anyone gotten Microsoft Store games running?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 11:47

Hello, as the title says, I was just wondering if anyone have gotten Microsoft Store games to run on Linux.

I once was very stupid and purchased Astroneer on that platform instead of Steam, would it be possible to run it on Linux or do I just have to dual boot?

Thanks!

Tested gaming on Linux - and it works, but have a few questions...

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 01. April 2024 - 11:11

Hi, I have a Steam Deck (which is a Linux PC) and a Linux laptop (productivity oriented, just an APU, no dedicated GPU). And I tried gaming - and it just works, very nicely actually.

I plan to move to Linux entirely, I may go for a proper Linux gaming laptop and I play mostly CRPGs, some action RPGs and sometimes the odd ARPG (PoE, LE).

Honestly, running Linux has for personally so many advantages (I'm a software engineer in my daytime job and I prefer to keep my privacy, also I prefer the simplicity and ease of use of Linux over the "overengineered" Windows) that I want to do this rather early than later.

Can I go 100% Linux? What do you think?
