Software like controller companion for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 3:43pm

Does anybody know if there is a software that allows similar control as to co stroller companion on windows?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/367670/Controller_Companion/

It makes using a controller to control a machine a breeze. Pressing start select at the same time will switch the controller between mouse mode (left analog stick moves mouse) and controller mode. You can also set shortcuts and commands to buttons while in mouse mode. It is also generally pretty smart that when you enter a full screen app it will automatically enter controller mode.

I've done some searching and I havnt found anything that will quite work like that. Just wondering if anyone has heard of something like that. I want to use Linux as a tv/game streaming box and I found controller companion was useful as it would prevent having to reach for a kb+mouse in almost all cases.

Starbound no Linux.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 2:22pm

Hi everyone, I'm facing a problem with Starbound on Linux. The game never opens and is frozen on the home screen. I've already tried opening Starbound - Unstable, but it seems that it also has problems, as the mod workshop and other resources are gone. Could anyone help me get the original Starbound to run on my Linux Fedora 39? I'm looking forward to finishing the game's story mode.

How can I launch a steam game with its exe file?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 12:39pm

So on windows, I had eu4 with not owned dlcs, and I could play with them when I launched the game with its exe. However, on linux, I can't launch it with the exe. Well, I can launch it, with wine, but when I do I get a "steam can't verify the ownership of the game" error. I've tried adding the exe file to steam and launching it with proton and without, but with that the game doesn't even launch. I've tried removing dlc's with both of these solutions btw. The game works just fine if I turn it on normally with steam, but then it doesn't have the dlcs, so it's basically unplayable. Any ideas?

Problem: can't launch the game with its exe file, eu4 to be specific. Steam can't verify the ownership.

Tried solutions: Adding the exe to steam, using proton, removing dlcs. Using wine, removing dlcs.

Linux: Mint 21.3 x86_64, kernel 6.5.0-1019-oem.

I found over my years of running Linux and gaming on it, that Linux forces one to play better games.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 11:08am

Now, a lot of games today, particularly online games, are chalk filled with egregious monetization practices. I don't even call them games for real gamers. Just games for wallet gamers; whales who keep on whaling. It's depressing. And the Western AAA companies literally get their input from whales; which is extremely troubling I find. Western AAA game companies have gone down the tubes for the most part.

But, no real loss to me. Time for more Indies that are more fun! The only real success I ever heard with AAA gaming in recent days has been games that are from FromSoftware; which is not Western. And they made a some Western game companies very jealous (like Ubisoft) with Elden Ring. 😁

Anyway, this site here https://macrotransactions.org/ is cool for listing in detail about how egregious the micro transactions are for a lot of popular games. And those certain games made by certain game companies, where the devs refuse to support Proton score an E, or a huge F. I won't play a game with so much as a single B rating if I decided to ever venture with online gaming. Only A rating will do. The guy is awesome for making this site. It would be great if more people can help him add more games to his site; beyond the scope of the popular ones that also share the same tactics.

And when I compare those low scoring games to this site https://areweanticheatyet.com/ where it lists games with anti cheat that support Proton and ones that are not, it kind of levels out to be honest.

I say this is great. And why Linux is great for gaming. Because it filters out a lot of awful games with egregious micro transactions. And the quality games generally don't have an issue with working on Linux.

Honestly, I am quite happy about it. It's progressive when people are being forced to play better quality games and move away from those lazy and greedy game companies. If they are so determined to move over to Linux entirely because of how chaotic Microsoft is today, that is. And I have to say Valve is doing a great job at making gaming on Linux go even further.

Looking for functionality similar to reWASD

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 7:08am

I'm looking for some advice on Linux gaming with an Xbox X|S controller.

I don't have the dexterity anymore to use Keyboard + Mouse (medical) and have been using reWASD for a couple years to do some advanced mapping.

I usually play Tactical FPS like Ready Or NoT, Zero Hour, Arma III, Ground Branch and similar, which have a LOT of keybinds. reWASD made this relatively easy by allowing me to map a keyboard button to a controller button multiple times. reWASD essentially allows me to use each button on the Xbox Controller 4 times

  1. Single press X on the xbox controller is mapped to R to reload.
  2. Double press X mapped to H to quick reload.
  3. Triple press X mapped to J for equip attachment (m203 for example)
  4. Long press X mapped to I to inspect mag (see how much ammo is left in the mag)

For games like Arma that have dozens of 100% needed burrons, something like reWASD is essential for me.

I've tried Joy2Key, AntiMicroX and a few others, and haven't been able to discover /figure out how to do something similar.

Steam controller support is amazing, but I've only been able to do 1:1 button mapping.

reWASD is literally the only reason I'm on Windows. I'm very comfortable using OpenSuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Pop_OS and others for well over 15 years, but to play some of these games that need well over a dozen mappings, I find myself stuck with otherwise fantastic software (reWASD) on a shitty bloatware OS.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing in Joy2Key, or AntiMicroX, or if there is something better that I just haven't discovered?

My preference is Gnome, but I can do KDE if necessary, or any other DE if there's better support or whatnot.

Screenshots added to show some of the configs I'm using in reWASD presently

Resident Evil 4 Remake: not launching (help needed)

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 12 Apr 2024 - 6:29am

Hi all, recently I purchased the resident evil 4 remake on steam under the assumption it wouldn't have any hiccups (all previous RE games i've played have never had an issues), but unfortunately I have been completely unable to start the game due to the following cryptic error

https://support.codefusion.technology/re4pg_oj3q12pf/?e=88500006&l=english&s=at

as an avid enjoyer of all the previous resident evil remakes and modern spins this is really upsetting for me as i had been anticipating playing this game for months, i'd really like to be able to play this game and not have to return it so any advice is appreciated

I've done all the basic troubleshooting steps, use different versions of wine/proton (experimental, latest GE, hotfix, GE7-53 (saw a comment from someone that said this version worked on amd when the game first launched))

tried on both X11 and Wayland (neither change anything)

Forcing the use of different amd gpu drivers (amdvlk and radv) through the use of the VK_DRIVER_FILES env variable

i was even desperate enough to install gnome and try it on there (X11 and Wayland) still to no success or change from this error log

This is rather puzzling as i've read reports on protondb of people with similar hardware and software running the game just fine

System information:

CPU: i7-12700K

GPU: AMD 6600XT

RAM: 32GB Corsair vengeance

DE/WM: KDE Plasma 6.0.3

OS: CachyOS (Fork of arch)

Kernel: 6.7.9

Running steam from the commandline doesn't produce any useful information

Vulkan package info

please let me know if there is anymore information i can provide and thanks in advance
