Difference between installing Steam via snap or apt?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. März 2024 - 10:57

Hello!

I've switched to Linux a few days ago and have been tinkering with Steam games.

At first I started with the snap version and while most games played well, there were a couple of problems like Monster Hunter Rise and Melvor Idle not opening, and Helldivers 2 anti-cheat detecting a debugger running.

Then I swapped to the apt version and all those problems seem to have been solved. I've also noticed that between the two clients they can't access each-other's library nor they share settings.

What are the differences between the two installations for them to behave so differently?

Does this also happen with other programs like Lutris?

Diablo IV Raytracing

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. März 2024 - 06:58

Hi there,

Has anybody with a Nvidia GPU managed to get the freshly implemented RT features to work? I am using Lutris, Wine-GE 8.26, DXVK 3.1, VKD3D 2.12 and the options are grayed out with my 4070-ti. Alan Wake II and CP2077 work flawlessly.

Thx!!!

Help, proton does not work at all.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. März 2024 - 04:37

I cannot for the life of me get proton running. All native steam games work no issue whatsoever, but not a single proton game starts. I click play and nothing happens. I've been trying to solve this for the past 3 days straight and it's driving me up the wall.

My setup:

  • GPU: RX 5700 XT
  • OS: Gentoo
  • Session: Hyprland/wlroots
  • Window server: wayland with xwayland for x11 support

An example log from overwatch: https://pastebin.com/kLmTibuS

By the looks of it the following lines are the culprit:

33273.796:0064:0070:trace:seh:dispatch_exception code=6ba flags=0 addr=00006FFFFFC1CE87 ip=6fffffc1ce87 33273.796:0064:0070:warn:seh:dispatch_exception RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE exception (code=6ba) raised

Other things I've tried:

  • Check if wine works: I've installed both wine-vanilla and wine-proton. wine-vanilla works perfectly no issues on both the x11 and wayland backend. wine-proton always crashes out (https://pastebin.com/iPAsjD1N) reporting not being able to get a working X driver (apparently though, this is outside the scope of proton and irrelevant)
  • Tried to attach the debugger to the running game to figure out in what dll the exception is raised: No /tmp/proton_<name> directory exists thus I cannot attach a debugger
  • Use proton-tkg to check if the problem is with valve's wine fork: proton-tkg failed to compile

Does anyone have any tips or anything? Pls help i want to play my games

steam download speeds being wack

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. März 2024 - 03:08

so I recently switched to tumbleweed from mint , but what I noticed is that the expected download time and the download speed are really out of sync, the steam monitor shows that I have a download speed of ~65mbts/sec and a comparable drive speed, yet it also states that it will take 1,5hrs to download a 30gb game, that with the stated download speeds should take less than 10 minutes

Resident Evil 4 Remake on Linux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 27. März 2024 - 02:51

RE4 Remake running on Arch Linux with Plasma 6 and Kernel 6.8.1

I'm testing some newer and heavier games on Linux, a while ago I made a video playing Helldivers 2 on Linux and now I'm testing RE4 Remake, and a very pleasant surprise is that my Xbox Series X controller worked without any problems.

And apparently we now have Ray Tracing working on Linux?? This was a pleasant surprise for me, all I need now is HDR to work for games and then I can get rid of my Windows partition.

2024: Should I still go for Linux?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. März 2024 - 22:26

I have been thinking a lot about finally going to Linux, but I still don't know if I really should do it.

I game a lot in my days but I also do a lot of work that could definitely be improved on Linux, especially because of the minimalism and simplicity I could achieve. But here's the thing...

I use software like Adobe Software, and I play games like Fortnite and Rainbow Six, who have anti-cheat that does not work on Linux at all, and they are games that I play often with friends or alone, and it's a pain in the ass to live with Linux while trying to play these games. Yes, I know that Dual Boot is my only option here if I wish to live with this software, but I will be honest, it's a PAIN in the ass. I hate Dual Boot a lot, even if it is in separate drivers, I just can't use it, it takes long ass times and just full of annoyances.

I have been thinking of this: to get a PC for Linux and do ALL of my stuff in there, and another PC for pure gaming, and use them at the same time. However, I haven't found any good ways of doing this, I wanted a way where I could access my gaming computer from my Linux desktop, without any delays and stuff like that.

Then I noticed this is probably just a waste of time, and that I really should go for one OS only.

I don't have a lot of problems with Windows, the privacy issues are not a concern for me (I disabled every kind of telemetry possible, and did a lot of tweaks to the OS, also I don't use a Microsoft Account at all, nothing about me is registered on this machine except for the local account user name), the OS runs stable (I didn't get a BSOD for 3 years now, absolutely no issues) and very well (no performance problems), and I run open-source software always (except for Discord, Adobe, Epic Games, you know what I mean).

So really, although Linux may have great advantages, amazing customization, the amount of cool and crazy stuff you can do, should I still switch to it as my daily drive? I love Linux a lot, but I don't think it can be my main drive.

I'm doing this because I know that Windows eventually is going to turn into a mess, requiring more from my system and I know that Microsoft will probably do a lot of stuff that a lot of Windows users may not be fond of.

For those who do not wish to read all of this because you all probably have seen many posts like this here: should I switch to Linux because of it's advantages over Windows even though Windows never gave me problems and I can do all of my work and gaming on it, even though I'm only not switching because of proprietary and anti-cheat games I really like to use?

If this is not a good post for this sub, the mods obviously can delete.

AMD 7900 GRE memory overclock limit news

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. März 2024 - 22:20

The 7900 GRE memory overclock limit was lifted by their latest drivers on windows by overriding it at startup.

Do you think there could be a possibility of AMD implementing it on linux (at least with their proprietary drivers since I believe they may not do it with the open-source ones?

Is pascal being left out?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. März 2024 - 21:52

So with recent news regarding NVK being vulkan 1.3 complaint and nova being announced (though it is really far away) the nvidia open source drivers are starting to become a reality. However both support only turing and above. While I understand that almost no-one is using kepler, some people still use maxwell and quite a lot of people use pascal to this day. I'm currently using a 1080, and, if not for the atrocious state of the proprietary driver, would still be completely happy with it.

So is there any hope for a pascal going open source? Or should I just leave it as soon as I get a chance to get a better gpu? For me it seems wasteful to replace a part that otherwise I would still be happily using for a couple of years at least

DXVK makes performance worse on archlinux

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 26. März 2024 - 21:12

hi

I'm using Lutris to play a Windows fangame (uses sdl2, it seems, also it's a Mario fangame, that's why I'm not saying the name) on my archlinux system, this time, I want to use direct-x instead of OpenGL since the latter one have graphics glitches, but here is the problem

using direct-x results in worse performance, and DXVK makes it much worse, and both are worse than the performance on a Windows 11 VMware guest

and I want a way to -at least- fix the DXVK problem

made sure that the drivers were installed, and still no difference
if there is a missing info, notify me
