[Guide] Installing gpu-screen-recorder on Ubuntu/Linux Mint (NVidivia Shadowplay equivalent)

26. April 2024 - 11:50

I was looking for a gameplay recorder on Linux. On windows I was using NVidia Shadowplay, and I found gpu-screen-recorder.

This guide is made for NVidia users. For AMD/Intel users, you'll need to install one or 2 more libs that are listed here.

Here is some info:

This is a screen recorder that has minimal impact on system performance by recording your monitor using the GPU only, similar to shadowplay on windows. This is the fastest screen recording tool for Linux.

There is a Flatpak package, but I wanted a cleaner way to use it using sources. And because there is no easy guide to install it, I decided to write one.

First let's install g++ and the compilation tools:

sudo apt install build-essential

Next, we need to install all dependencies:

sudo apt install libdrm-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libx11-dev libxcomposite-dev libxdamage-dev libxrender-dev libxrandr-dev libpulse-dev libva-dev libcap-dev libavfilter-dev

Then, we'll clone the repository

git clone https://repo.dec05eba.com/gpu-screen-recorder

We move in the downloaded folder:

cd gpu-screen-recorder

and start the compilation:

cd gpu-screen-recorder

After few seconds, this message appears:

Successfully built gpu-screen-recorder
Successfully installed gpu-screen-recorder

gpu-screen-recorder is ready to use. Start recording with:

gpu-screen-recorder -w screen -f 60 -o ~/Videos/"video_$(date +"%F %T")".mp4

To stop recording, just kill the process in your terminal (Ctrl + c)

Known issues: On some distro and games, in-game vsync will be lost when recording. This doesn't affect the output video. Vsync will work again as soon as you stop the recording. I filled a bug here, but it seems it's more a driver/composing issue.

Any question let me know in comments

Unable to install Waydroid / python-gbinder & libgbinder fail to install on Arch Linux with zen kernel.

26. April 2024 - 11:31

I am attempting to install to install Waydroid, however anything I attempt to do so fails. I have tried multiple solutions that I have found online, but none of them have worked.

I had managed to install both of these dependencies, as well as Waydroid, however trying to launch it didn't work, giving errors of missing files. Attempting to reinstall the dependencies brought me back to step 1 of none of them working.

I am using EndeavourOS with Linux-zen kernel as recommended on the Waydroid wiki page.

This is the output upon attempting to install it: https://pastebin.com/j3YMvnPL

neofetch output:

Question about VRR

26. April 2024 - 10:54

I'm looking for a monitor upgrade, mostly for gaming. I've currently settled on ASUS ProArt PA348CGV.

I've checked this monitor's manual and it says this:

https://preview.redd.it/8yeu9pou9swc1.png?width=429&format=png&auto=webp&s=b44a3b1290cbc3e6e94acd8b9b8f7333ac079da8

So will I be able to use 120Hz VRR in KDE Plasma 5.27 on Wayland if I connect the monitor with displayport cable or will I be able to only use 100 Hz? I have a Navi 24 AMD GPU and using the opensource amdgpu driver.

Back up your saves before updating to the new Fo4!

26. April 2024 - 10:39

I had decided to start a new game anyway on the latest "next gen" update, but just now I decided to try and load an older save to test something and they were all gone! Luckily I saved my most important collecting save a few weeks back so it is not a complete loss, but don't risk it and backup!

Looking a little more into it my saves still appear to be on the steam cloud so I am going to try and manually download them, fingers crossed.

Natural Selection 2 - We welcome new players to the paid but cheap game.

26. April 2024 - 10:23

As great multiplayer game i will be recommend https://store.steampowered.com/app/4920/Natural_Selection_2/ .

From the creators of Subnautica.

You can use the DirectX 9 or 11 engine.

It also runs under Linux over Wine(proton). There is no updated information on the WINE website.

Pro tips from player Nightmare:

https://www.youtube.com/@nightmarens2

And if you're a really good shooter, you can compete with the best in time.

It is quite difficult to master all classes of invaders or weapons and very dynamic strategy.

My tips for first time:

Use 120 degress angles, alien vision mod(if you will be play as marine).

Forced to return to Windows (for gaming)

26. April 2024 - 10:13

I know I'm going to get hate from this forum, but I wanted to share my experiences playing linux after almost 5 months. I love working and doing everything with Linux, the freedom to modify any part, the performance, privacy, etc. But to play I had to switch back to dual boot

There are a number of disadvantages currently in Linux that make the gaming experience inferior. At least with an Nvidia GPU:

- Perfomance in games: It is notorious that Linux games are in worse conditions in the vast majority of cases. Not only the loss of FPS, but the micro stuttering or the higher consumption of CPU and memory making some 32-bit games crash.

Anticheat support: Sadly some devs don't want to support their anticheat on Linux.

Steam/Proton: Some versions work well, others with bugs, others poorly... Normally this problem is easily solved thanks to the ProtonDB community.

Modding: In my case I use tools that have been specifically designed for Windows. Emulating them in Wine usually works but expect problems. Another issue are the mods and launchers that I have not been able to make work. This is a problem in my case because I usually create all kinds of modifications.

Mouse: I usually play competitive games and the mouse on linux does not respond as well as on Windows. I have tried to find the best settings, even with console commands. But there has been no way to get the mouse to work as well.

Sound: Ok, Dolby Atmos for me is a must have. On Linux you have PulseAudio, but it doesn't reach the same sound quality.

10bit color/HDR: As far as I have researched this does not work on Linux natively and if forced expect major problems.

Others minors problems: When I close a game in steam, the desktop freezes for 10 seconds. Another thing is that sometimes when I do alt+tab while playing I get a black screen for two seconds.

TLDR: Yes, you can play almost anything on Linux. But the gaming experience is not as good as on Windows, or at least for demanding gamers. Linux has improved a lot these years and will continue to do so, but for now at least in my case I need to dual boot.

I love Linux and I need Nvidia for AI, I just want to share my experience of the past few months.

Skyrim modding help

26. April 2024 - 10:11

I’ve been trying to get back into Skyrim recently, and decided to try to mod it. Now, I use the brand new Ubuntu 24.04, which might explain a lot. But there’s still something messy. I first try to install Mod organizer 2 inside the proton prefix using the Linux installer found on GitHub. Sadly, that didn’t work at all, and I have no clear idea why as the terminal does not return clear errors, but the installer crashes. Then I decided to try and install Mod organizer 2 directly into the prefix manually, but I found information lackluster. That really is a shame because modding is the only thing missing for my Linux use. Because of it I’m now reconsidering a Windows dual boot for games that I want to mod.

Lurker done lurking.

26. April 2024 - 06:04

Thinking about making the switch full-time and I had some questions before fully making the switch.

Specs: Ryzen 5600X 16 GB DDR4 GTX 1060 6GB 500 GB WD Black SSD 4 TB Seagate HDD (2*2TB) 650W PSU

  1. Which distro is great for gaming but is also compatible with my GPU? I know NVIDIA hates Linux, and vice versa but I know there are some friendly options.

  2. Can Linux access my HDDs if they're NTFS formatted? Played around with this, but I couldn't fully figure it out, but I have games already installed so I'd like to know.

  3. How easy is it to run the aforementioned games? Am I better off reinstalling everything from Steam or is it as easy as installing proton and I'm on my merry way?

Thanks in advance!

How to set permissions for a portable steam library?

26. April 2024 - 04:15

I've very recently made the jump to linux and have been having a bunch of issues. This has caused me to distrohop a bunch, seeing if anything resolves it. Knowing that I might end up doing this I set up my steam library on a separate volume so I'm not re-downloading terrabytes of data every time I reformat my main drive. Unfortunately this seems to have produced a situation where I can't reliably use the library.

The files are all there, and I can import the library into steam such that it sees them as installed, but any time I try to run a game it basically instantly quits out--even games that I know will run on my system. If I install a game to my home directory on my main volume it runs. If I then reinstall that game to my designated portable library it will no longer run. I'm guessing there's some sort of permissions issue blocking things, but I don't see anything on the console and am not quite sure where to start.....Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've already tried:

  • chmod -R a+rwx to the whole volume

  • chgrp -R gamers to the whole volume and adding my user to the gamers group

  • playing around with mounting options for the volume. my current fstab entry for the drive looks like this monstrosity as I just keep adding things hoping it will resolve:

UUID=68614700-1b0e-455b-9f84-5ceed04d2215 /mnt/games btrfs defaults,exec,suid,rw,users,noatime,lazytime,commit=120,discard=async,compress-force=zstd:1,space_cache=v2 0 0

any sort of direction would be really appreciated. I don't have enough physical space on my main volume to support the library, and I also definitely don't want to have to redownload the whole thing....

Run Fifa 23 on KVM.

26. April 2024 - 04:01

Hi guys!

I have this problem. I have an Alt Linux Workstation K running KVM with a Windows 10 guest machine on which I am trying to run FiFa23. The game itself installs normally, goes through Anticheat and freezes on a small black window... (Could you tell me what I’m doing wrong, and whether it’s even possible to run this game on this virtual machine, because on Steam under Linux the game tells me that Wine is not supported... (Windows Firewall is turned off and I also have 3D acceleration enabled. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope. ;)

So it goes!

Not exactly Linux related, but should I update my BIOS

26. April 2024 - 03:47

I am not having any issues but I noticed my BIOS was a couple of versions behind, is there any reason I should update or do I risk doing more damage than good messing around with the BIOS?

Edit: AsRock B450M pro4, currently installed BIOS version 3.10, update to version 3.5 (latest compatible version)
