This is a vague work in progress to help address some of the common tech support questions.

These suggestions are terse. They might be expanded upon. They should at least give some hints about what to search for.

Games start now, but some of them look strange

17. April 2024 - 18:12

GPU: ASUS TUF RX 7900XTX

CPU: Ryzen 9 7800X3D

RAM: Cosair Vengance 2x16GB 6000MHz DDR5 Ram

Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi

PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850 W

OS: Fedora 39 (Kernel 6.8.4-200, Mesa 23.3.6.)

Display Resolution: 3440 x 1440

I had some troubles running games on my system. Now they can all be started, but some have a strange graphic error. It looks very similar in different games.

This is what it looks like for Call of Duty: Black Ops II and GTA V

Having issues with NVIDIA/Lutris/Wine

17. April 2024 - 17:34

Basically, don’t know how to explain my issue, but I am trying to play freespace 2 from GOG in lutris and it wont run, in fact the only game I got to work was FNV- all my other games just wont run, I dont even remember what I did to get FNV working, and when I say “working” the UI flashes like its trying to give me a stroke.

I dont know where to begin in asking for help, or what the real problem actually is, I just want my good old games to run, for some downtime here and there.

PS: I would never consider going back to windows, for any reason. I love the FOSS apps and the Linux open source operating systems, I use Linux Mint Debian Edition and an NVIDIA RTX 3050 (ti?) on laptop with 16 gb of ram. If you want I could check which drivers but im pretty sure they are the most recent ones.

X11 and Wayland performance disparity on Intel?

17. April 2024 - 17:27

This is something I have been desperately trying to figure out, yet I have no answer. Whenever I am on Radeon graphics, I can switch between Wayland and Xorg (on the new Plasma) with zero or marginal performance deltas. On Intel iGPU's, though, Wayland runs ever so slightly faster in the games I play. I had some hypotheses as to why this happens, but those don't seem to hold up. Triple-buffering appears to be enabled in either case, and the GPU utilization monitors don't report any background activity whilst in-game. I am using the same Xorg modesetting driver in either case (the deprecated xf86 Intel video driver runs even slower).

This would be an excuse to use Wayland in and of itself, but my favorite DE doesn't support it yet, so I'd like to get the best out of Xorg in the meantime.

XWayland 24.1 RC Released With Explicit Sync, Improved Rootful & GLAMOR Optimizations

17. April 2024 - 17:21

https://www.phoronix.com/news/XWayland-24.1-RC

Article Text:

As expected, the first release candidate of the forthcoming XWayland 24.1 is now available ahead of its planned stable debut in May.

This is another big feature update for XWayland to enjoy running X11/X.Org apps/games under Wayland compositors. The XWayland 24.1 release is delivering explicit sync support that's long been brewing throughout the stack and delivers the most noticeable improvements for those using the NVIDIA proprietary Linux graphics driver. Also of NVIDIA relevance in this version is removing the EGLStream back-end now that NVIDIA is finally supporting GBM.

XWayland 24.1 also delivers a number of rootful improvements including HiDPI and fractional scaling for the rootful mode, among other improvements.

How do I get Fallout 4 to work?

17. April 2024 - 17:07

Currently using Pop!_OS 22.04 and I've tried Proton 8.0-5, Proton Experimental, Proton 7.0-6 and Proton GE 9-4.

The game only works fullscreen on Proton 7, but menu navigation with keyboard goes so fast that it's unusable.

Proton 8, Experimental and GE: the game freezes a second after starting in fullscreen mode and the cursor goes out of the game in windowed mode.

Steam doesn't recognize Bluetooth Stadia controller

17. April 2024 - 16:48

Hey folks, I'm trying to get my Bluetooth Stadia controller to work with Steam. I've read some of the other Stadia posts here, but haven't found a solution. Any help appreciated.

Current issue: I have a Stadia controller that's been switched to Bluetooth. I've used it successfully on Windows for a year. I can connect the controller to Linux via Bluetooth. It shows up in my devices. But when I go to Steam settings, it shows No Controller Detected. As far as Steam is concerned, the controller doesn't exist. Any ideas how to fix?

I'm running Linux Lite Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS Kernel Linux 5.4.0-176-generic (x86-64)

My hardware is an HP Chromebox

Wow running poorly

17. April 2024 - 16:08

Hello everyone, wow started running poorly yesterday, and I can’t figure out why. I’m on Pop!_OS 22.04, I have a Ryzen 9 7950X3D. A Radeon 7800 XT, and 32 gb of RAM. I’m running Battle.net through Lutris. My wine version is wine-ge-8-26-x86_64. I’ve uninstalled lutris, battle net and all the games and wow/wow classic still perform terribly.

Nvidia resizeable BAR blocked by another BAR

17. April 2024 - 14:07

In short, I have a 3090 for which lspci -vvs shows:

Capabilities: [bb0 v1] Physical Resizable BAR BAR 0: current size: 16MB, supported: 16MB BAR 1: current size: 256MB, supported: 64MB 128MB 256MB 512MB 1GB 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB 32GB BAR 3: current size: 32MB, supported: 32MB

But dmesg reveals:

[ 0.513474] pci 0000:08:00.0: BAR 1 [mem 0x6000000000-0x600fffffff 64bit pref]: assigned [ 0.513520] pci 0000:08:00.0: BAR 3 [mem 0x6010000000-0x6011ffffff 64bit pref]: assigned [ 0.513543] pci 0000:08:00.0: BAR 0 [mem 0xa4000000-0xa4ffffff]: assigned

In short, BAR 1 may be resizable, but BAR 3 is blocking it.

This on a laptop (Lenovo P53) with i7-9850H and CM246 chipset. GPU is attached via TB3.

kernel command-line contains:

pci=assign-busses,realloc

Is there currently any way to convince the kernel to set aside 32GB address space for BAR 1 on boot? Or remap BAR 1 or 3 to somewhere else?

Anyone tried frostpunk 2 beta?

17. April 2024 - 13:34

Hey guys, i tried frostpunk 2 beta yesterday. The game is running fine with proton at the moment but i am facing another problem. Whenever i exit the game, my monitor freaks out. The refresh rate drops and i can see screen fades to black very quickly, like flickering on old screens. I have to unplug all my cables including psu and restart my PC to solve it. What is causing this problem? The game, wayland, Mesa or proton? Have you experienced something similar with same or different games?

System Info: Archlinux, kernel 6.8 Mesa 24 AMD 6700xt gpu Proton (i think it was experimental version when i first launched the game) Swaywm 1.9

Linux gaming is as simple as enabling steam play, right?

17. April 2024 - 11:55

I've migrated to Zorin from Windows and had all my games on a few NTFS drives. I installed steam (native) via CLI and tried running some games after re-engaging my old libraries. Literally not a single non-linux game runs. I hit play, shaders try to compile and the button turns blue indicating that the games are trying to launch, but nothing happens. The Play button returns to green. I press it and the same thing happens. I read some places that NTFS is a problem, so I tested a basic game "Tomb Raider Legend" on my primary drive formatted as ext4. Same issue.

Is there something I'm missing?
