180hz display doesn't feel like it's running at 180hz

22. Mai 2024 - 22:34

I'm pulling up the framerate counter in steam. Many games are running well over 100fps, yet they all feel like they're running at 60 still.

2070 Super, 555 beta drivers, Wayland, KDE w/kwin-explicit-sync package, arch linux. I do have multiple mixed refresh rate monitors attached but AFAIK that shouldn't be an issue on Wayland?

When I'm on the desktop and just moving the mouse around, it feels right. It's only when I load into a game.

I also should mention, I am running 5 monitors and 2 of those are plugged into the iGPU. There might be something weird going on there also that I'm not aware of.

Diablo 4 fps drop from 60 - 80 to 15 - 20 when teleporting

22. Mai 2024 - 22:09

I'm trying to play diablo 4 on my arch machine, I installed through battlenet using lutris.

These are my specs:

  • Arch linux
  • Nvidia 1050ti 4gb
  • Intel i7 7700
  • 24GB Ram
  • SSD drive

The game works and runs, in the worst quality possible but it runs, i.e:

  • with all settings set to the absolute low
  • resolution scaling set to AMD FSR 1.0
  • quality set to 'performance'
  • sharpen image to 20 - 0

I manage to get 60 - 80 fps out of this settings but the problem is that as soon as I teleport to whatever town (it can be a town with or without a lot objects to render) the fps drops to 15 - 20, this also happens if I change any setting again, like let's say I change sharpen image from 20 to 0.

This is how I installed it:

  • Installed lutris first.
  • Installed all the wine dependencies that are listed here.
  • Ran lutris.
  • Installed Diablo through Bnet from here.
  • Before ran it I checked the wine version, so far I've tried:
    • wine-staging: works but I ge the issue I just mention at the beginning
    • ge-proton: same as wine-staging
    • proton 8: bnet launcher is completely black
    • wine-ge-8-26-x86_64: same as proton 8
  • I also try adding PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 in game execution env variables under the system tab but it didn't changed anything.

I know my gpu is not in the recommended range, but is better that the minimum required and of course in windows the game run just fine, I wasn't hopping the same in linux but not the point that it is uplayable since it is listed as platinum in protondb.

What else could I try?

Heroic not installing Dragon Age

22. Mai 2024 - 21:26

First off I'm using Pop!_OS

I downloaded Heroic yesterday, created an Epic Account because I wanted to get Dragon Age: Inquisition for free.

Went to install it, little pop up at the top says "installing" then almost immediately says "installed" but there is no play option on the game, just "install game". I checked the folder I told it to install to and nothing.

I'm assuming I've done something wrong. I can't find any thing on Google that matches my issue.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me any advice?

Mesa 24.1 released.

22. Mai 2024 - 21:15

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/tags/mesa-24.1.0

From Phoronix:

Mesa 24.1 has countless improvements to the AMD RadeonSI and RADV drivers, huge progress made on the open-source NVK Vulkan driver for NVIDIA GPUs, and a lot of ongoing optimization work with the Intel ANV driver as well as preparations for Xe2 graphics with Lunar Lake and Battlemage. Intel Arrow Lake graphics support is also good to go with Mesa 24.1. Mesa 24.1 also carries support for upcoming Radeon graphics IP, explicit sync support for Vulkan drivers, much better Asahi AGX Gallium3D driver support to the point of having OpenGL 4.6 capabilities, new Arm Mali GPU support within the Panfrost driver, continued Microsoft D3D12 driver enhancements, and more.

Is there's hope for Wuthering Waves

22. Mai 2024 - 20:16

So, I've seen that the CBT didn't work cuz of the anti-cheat (like every other game), and I was wondering if there's hope (or any info) about the game being playable in the release (tomorrow).

Every Friend I know are switching to Linux and I am helping them to install it

22. Mai 2024 - 19:43

Where I live, Linux isn't very popular—most of my friends use Windows. However, the recent issues with Windows 11 have made them consider switching to Linux. I've been their main source of motivation for this change, but I've always emphasized that the decision is entirely up to them.

Initially, I expected them to ignore my suggestions, just as they did when I previously warned them about Windows' privacy-invading features. But recently, they've shown genuine interest in Linux and are seriously thinking about making the switch. They approached me for advice on choosing a distro and help with installation.

At first, I considered recommending Linux Mint, as it's widely regarded as the best option for beginners. However, I eventually suggested Nobara. Despite some concerns about using a distro maintained by a single person, I’ve found that Nobara offers excellent out-of-the-box support for gaming and has great overall support.

So far, 3 out of the 5 of my friends have made the switch, and the remaining two are planning to come over this week with their laptops to join the Linux club as well.

Minecraft forge causes my entire pc to freeze when loading into a world

22. Mai 2024 - 19:34

This is with ATLauncher via the AUR, as the flatpak version breaks vivecraft. Fabric works without any hiccups though. This is arch linux with the zen kernel on a ryzen 7 5600x and rx 7600. I usually have to turn the pc off.

I've been trying to use pokecube AIO with a few other mods. But it in order to load into a world with just pokecube aio I had to manually set the jre to beta in the instance setting, but after loading into an instance that uses Java 21 it seems to be back to the same issue.

Assertion Failed Wine vulkan

22. Mai 2024 - 18:45

When I run Mortal Kombat 1 on linux i get the following error:

Assertion failed!

Program: Z:/media/samsung/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Mortal Kombat 1/MK12/Binaries/Win64/MK12.exe

File: ../src-wine/dlls/winevulkan/loader_thunks.c
Line: 3226

Expression: "!status && "vkCreateSwapchairKHR""

Press OK to exit the program, or Cancel to start the Wine debugger.

This error appears randomly, but from my experience it happens only at the transition from cutscene to fight sequence and vice versa. All the other solutions for this problem were for people with AMD GPUs or that were on Ubuntu based distros.

I am running an Arch Linux system with Hyprland (Wayland) an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1650, 16 GB Ram, using Proton-GE 9.5 for the game and the distro version of steam, not flatpak. The game is stored on a btrfs shared partition with windows.

I just got Linux Mint up and running, I have a few problems and I'd love an expert to set me straight.

22. Mai 2024 - 18:31

I've got dual monitors. The main one is working fine, and is displaying the 165hz. The second one is also working, but is stuck at 60hz, when it supports 144 and did so when I was on windows.

My main monitor uses display port and the second monitor uses HDMI. I'm unsure what to do.

I have noticed that despite being at 165hz, a lot of games seem to perform at a lower framerate. It just doesn't have that buttery smooth feel that you'd expect when you have an FPS monitor telling you your game is running at 165fps. A good example would be games running in wine, like World of Warcraft. Yeah, it runs pretty well, but definitely not at the framerate it says it is, and it was smoother on windows. Would there be any way to make games running through wine behave better?

Before you give me advice, I must stress that you will need to explain it to me like I'm 5. Thank you for your time.

Will hybrid systems get the benefits of explicit sync support?

22. Mai 2024 - 16:34

From as far as I'm concerned, the driver and the other components have been showing good results on nvidia GPUs that are usually the main GPU of the computer. But will it work on hybrid systems as well? specially those that are muxless

LACT Fan Curve Configuration Help

22. Mai 2024 - 16:12

Hey people.

Need a bit of help regarding the fan controls in LACT. I'm not sure the target temperature in the option is the edge temperature or junction temperature. And I don't understand what is acoustic target means.

https://preview.redd.it/gp9pbwm6jz1d1.png?width=823&format=png&auto=webp&s=57bf398eade2fc009134dd7e9e12a51463103edc

I'm using RX7600 with blower fan, the default fan curve is super aggressive and excessively loud. I'm trying to replicate the AMD Adrenaline Quiet settings on windows targeting max fan speed of 2200RPM and let the GPU reach the max temperature limit usually at 85c with hotspot at 105c. Does this look about right?

How switching to Linux made me fall in love with gaming again

22. Mai 2024 - 16:12

I’ve been a gamer for more than 15 years. It’s always been my favorite hobby but a few years back it started getting a bit too boring, it got so bad that I almost quit it entirely. It just “wasn’t the same”.

Recently I’ve moved to Linux full time (Arch btw) because I (as someone who works in tech) hate Microsoft with every fiber of my being and the fact that some modern games are not supported is exactly the reason why it’s been so amazing.

I realized that what was killing my love for gaming was modern games like the new CoDs, Fortnite, etc.. These games filled with purchases, battle passes and soulless gameplay.

This forced me to start trying other type of games (mainly single-player games) like The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Sekiro, Project Zomboid,…

And oh man, my love for gaming just keeps growing. I’m so eager to just chill back and relax and continue the stories of the games, listening to some music and knowing that I own my OS.

I realized, to me it doesn’t matter if Anti-Cheat compatibility never happens, I don’t need games that use it!
