NFSMW Extra Options doesn't load under Proton, on Steam.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Mar 2024 - 4:57am

I'm playing NFSMW on Steam through Proton. The game runs fine, but any mod I try to install doesn't work. I have installed the dinput8.dll in the main folder of the game, the "scripts" folder, reinstalled the game and everything I could, but nothing worked.

Maybe it's something about Proton not using the dinput8.dll? I have no idea how to override it in Steam Game Properties.

I tried playing the game with regular Wine, but it runs with no sound.

Difficulty getting the Fallout New Vegas Wabbajack modlist "Capital Punishment" running on Steam deck.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Mar 2024 - 1:59am

This specific page has a previous installation method, but that is now defunct due to changes on how it boots in windows. Currently, the modlist uses this MO2 plugin. There are probably other reasons it doesn't launch. So far, I have created my own "Stock game" folder that has all the files that would be created in the New Vegas folder and have the MO2 pointing to them. I just get a black screen on launch. A user in the Wabbajack discord who creates guides for the Steam deck has only been able to get half the modlist working, though I am not sure the current state of their progress.

I do not have the technical knowledge to work out the problem, only observe it - and at this point I am determined to get this to work. I would be extremely appreciative of any Linux god with niche knowledge involving modding New Vegas on Steam Deck.

Death Stranding - Ultrawide Fix Trainer in Proton

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Mar 2024 - 12:48am

Hi, i'm trying to make this trainer work through wine/proton.

https://github.com/RoseTheFlower/UltrawideIndex/releases/tag/deathstranding

It's unclear to me which is the correct process to make the trainer find the game and apply settings correctly.

I already tried to run it inside the game prefix with protontricks: it starts but once launched has no effect on the game.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of The Zone launch issues

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 17 Mar 2024 - 12:00am

Hi all, im having issues getting the standalone mod S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of the Zone working through proton. After i saw how flawlessly Shadow of Chernobyl played through proton, i didnt think it would be much different for Call of the Zone. I couldnt find anyone else with the same problem as me. Im using linux mint btw

I added the exe file to steam. Proton 7, 8, 9, and experimental crash with a "memory error" popup. When i choose GE-proton8.30, the game launches but the main menu is completely jumbled up. I didnt get a chance to load into a game due to me changing the ingame DX setting from 11 to 9. After which the game would always crash with the error popup "you dont meet the hardware requirements" (i have well past the hardware requirements and can easily play this on this highest setting on windows)

Now while the easy solution would just to be play CoTZ on windows and boot back into linux for when i wanna play SoC, id really like to see if theres anything i can do to get CoTZ working through proton/wine.

Would DXVK help here? Idk how to install or use it, but ive heard it can work small miracles, especially with Nvidia cards.

Edit: Specs: OS: Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon Linux Kernel: 5.15.0-100 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X RAM: 31.3GIB GPU: RTX 4070

Upgrading to Nobara 39 feels like a down grade

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 11:07pm

I was on Nobara 36 for about a year and last week I finally did a big update. For the most part I think my system is substantially less usable. In on particular game I think the screen is jittery. It might be very un even frame times or it might be showing me old frames. A possibly related and semi-reproducible phenomenon is YouTube will be full screen on a second monitor and will alternate between two frames of data while the audio continues. There is some interaction with what I'm mousing over on my other display. I've only experienced this while looking at Steam's library and hovering over a title so maybe it's a chromium rendering bug. Moving the mouse away from that area or making the YouTube video not full screen makes the flickering stop. I've also noticed flickering on the background. The whole screen flickers to black except where a window is present.

The second and probably unrelated issue I'm having is about sleep. My computer not going to sleep properly is the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak. That was the last straw that made me leave Windows for Linux a year or two ago. On Nobara 36 no problems. I like to fall asleep while a YouTube video is playing. Lately I'm waking up to the array of videos I can watch when the computer should have gone to sleep hours ago. Playing music has the opposite problem. Previously the music would play and the monitors would go into power save mode but the system would preform as expected, keep streaming music. Now my system does go into sleep mode because nothing is full screen I guess. For now I'm being forced into having good sleep habits and turn my computer off before I decide to go to sleep.

Is this a wayland problem? a Plasma problem? Something I can fix without distro hopping again?

I now can't play games on steam. Not sure what happened

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 10:28pm

[Linux Mint] I'm trying to play The Talos Principle 2. Something happened, now I can't play it at all.

I initially had it on my HDD with Steam Play enabled, experimental on. It worked fine but it was a little crashy, so I put it in a new steam folder in my SSD to try and reduce crashes and improve overall quality of the game.

But now it just doesn't run at all, I click play, and it "runs" for a couple seconds before reverting back to a "Play" button. The same thing happens to other games in my library, I tested with 2 other random games. I read somewhere that if I disable Steam Play it should work, but when I go to that setting I can't flip the switch. Like, it just doesn't respond to my input.

So then I tried to run Steam in a Windows Virtual Machine, but the install button is greyed out, no idea why, maybe because Steam Play is enabled on my profile. Not sure. Any help is appreciated.

Flatpak Steam version support HDR?

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 8:34pm
Anyone knows about this? Could you also use HDR on a GOG game through Heroic?

The tutorials Ive found online are all aimed for the native version, but I don't like having proprietary stuff not contained.

Steam Big Picture not filling screen when launched

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 6:06pm

I've been working on setting up a PC to run Steam on my TV and I'm running into a weird issue where Steam will start in Big Picture mode but it won't fill the screen, just a portion of it in the upper left corner. I can't get a picture right now but it looks similar to this: https://preview.redd.it/brn5k47yvl9b1.jpg?width=1024&auto=webp&s=e6ec4a6f125cb3cf27921d74244643d8cd38e7c2

The only difference in my case is there's no background or taskbar as I'm using Mint and Openbox for the session. I have a bit of a weird setup as my TV is 4K but I don't want anything running in 4K so I have the resolution set to 1080p using xrandr, which I could see being part of the issue. I've been able to get Big Picture to fill the screen but only if I switch to normal steam then back. This works for me but this is primarily for my partner and that's a bit too complicated.

This is the Xsession file I'm using:

[Desktop Entry] Name=Steam Big Picture Comment=Start Steam in Big Picture mode Exec=/usr/local/bin/start-steam-big-picture Type=Application

And this is a stripped down version of the script it's calling:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 openbox-session & steam -bigpicture logout

The OS is Mint 21.1 with Cinnamon

My Linux skills aren't amazing so this is a bit beyond me and ChatGPT has yielded no help. I'd appreciate any ideas as once it's working Steam Big Picture is great

Steam games only start after I've run X11 once

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 6:00pm

I prefer to use Wayland because I have no issues with NVIDIA drivers or anything else, but if I just start my computer and try to launch a game like GTA V or Garry's mod they fail to start. GTA fails because it can't detect a DirectX card, GMOD fails gives a "Failed to create D3D Device" error. When I log out and start an X11 session, the games work fine. The strange thing is that after I log out and go back to Wayland, the games work flawlessly untill I reboot. Im using Fedora 39 with KDE and proprietary NVIDIA drivers on a hybrid graphics laptop. If anyone knows a potential cause and solution that would be great. I'm happy to follow up with more information as needed.

We have a NATIVE LINUX build, and we need testers. We ALSO need tips on CLOSED BETA

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 5:32pm

Hey, Munin here, we're working on native linux support for our game, and like always, we really need feedback. It is thanks to you that we can give the best experience out of the box.

This might be the last update our Demo will get in a while, besides patching some soft-locks. If you really like what we're doing, wishlist our game, join our discord, and give us ideas on how to move forward (more bellow).

Wizarducks and the Lost Hat on Steam

Our Discord

Our Twitter

You can report here on reddit, but a lot of you prefer our discord due to posting screenshots and videos. If the post isn't clear, I apologize, one of my family members is on the hospital, so the week has been messy. If you have any questions we'll do our best to answer them.

Feedback Requests

The best feedback you can give us is sit down, play, and give your thoughts on what you like and what you didn't. But if you want more objective testings...:

Steam Deck

If you're playing on the deck, let us know how it is going. Framerate should be fine but tweaking it might get you to some odd bug that we (think) fixed it. If you can reproduce it or just tell us what you encountered that would be great.

Also, let us know if the proton version is being downloaded instead of the native one.

Key mapping extra buttons isn't enabled yet but if you have some workaround, we'd love to hear it too.

Tree Collision

We made a boo-boo last time, when tweaking hit-boxes.

A lot of out-of-bounds things just kept popping up and enemies were free-roaming more than they should, along with some puzzles making you get stuck.

I want to say it is fixed now, but it happened at least once with me. So be sure to save your progress.

Switch Controllers

Any controller feedback is great, especially mainstream ones.

Right now we're sorely lacking on switch controllers. If you guys can help us, let us with that, we'd be very happy.

Please check our accessibility settings

It is not yet complete, but we have a lot of things there that might even help you troubleshoot or speedrun the game

Speedrunners

The 3 minutes record hasn't been broken yet. Just saying.

Steam Runtime

While we're working on it, the Steam runtime connection has been giving us too much trouble on Linux. It should work on Proton, though. It is taking a backseat because we need to work on other features of the game, but should be done before launch.

Maybe we'll do an exclusive update test on it again.

Once again, you guys help us so much

Developing games for any platform is difficult. With Linux, nowadays, the extra difficulty lies on being in the dark until someone kindly points you to the right direction, and that is what you kind souls have been doing with us. I don't think it would have been possible without this subreddit.

Thank you so much for testing our game, for guessing problems we hadn't imagined we'd run to, especially with Steam, that is pushing Proton more than native builds.

We need tips on how to move forward

If you check our twitter, you'll see a lot of things that are not in the demo at all.

The demo is a great way to have anyone go and immediately start playing to see if it runs on their computer, we put a lot of effort into it, and we're very proud of the results. Michael has put countless nights into making it work just right for Windows and Linux, and I... well, I watched him do it.

But we can't keep adding things to the demo forever if we want the game to be finished. Maybe after we make a bigger progress we update the demo to be longer, but it is not currently within our reach.

We might make big patches and distribute keys in the future, or just keep things small, we're really not sure. But you guys have been the ones that made sure to tell what was working and what wasn't when we couldn't.

We are more than willing to listen on what could make this relationship going, so hopefully other small developers also feel encouraged to support Linux natively.

Once again, thank you so, so much. I know it sounds like pandering but what you guys did on previous thread is just wholesome and helped us immensely.

I have problems with playing Assetto Corsa.

Reddit Linux_Gaming - 16 Mar 2024 - 5:01pm

Yeah, playing AC on Linux is quite streaked but I want to play and tried so much solution way. I tried some codes (which you can see on proton db) and downgrading 5.0-10 thing but after all, it's still not opening and after using proton 5.0-10, I started to get a this error when try run the game. Any other solutions? (System: i5-11100H and RTX 3060 also Linux Mint.)
