Advice for my Asus ROG Ally

After burning though my 3 month Gamepass trial I'm looking to put a Linux distro on my ROG Ally.

I want to dual boot with the default windows install to keep the Armoury Crate app and the firmware/bios updates that it manages.

My default option would have been ChimeraOS except it doesn't natively support dual booting. I have found a guide that will (apparently) let me do that, but before I go through all that extra effort I was wondering if anyone had other good options.

For the most part I want to treat this device like a console where I don't have to dock it every week to apply updates. So happy with something Arch based as long as the distro handles the complexity of updates so they can be automatic (e.g. like ChimeraOS) I've done my fair share of distro hopping and use Mint on my main mahcine, but again I want this like a console that basically boots into game mode.

Most of the games I'll play are on Steam, but bonus points if it somehow supports GoG and/or PS Remote Play out of the box / simply. Emulation isn't required but would be nice.

P.S. I also want to take a factory disk image before I start messing around, years ago I would have used Clonezilla, but that was always a little complicated and it's been a while since I've tried so don't want to stuff anything up, so if there's a good image backup util that would be good too

Now, a lot of games today, particularly online games, are chalk filled with egregious monetization practices. I don't even call them games for real gamers. Just games for wallet gamers; whales who keep on whaling. It's depressing. And the Western AAA companies literally get their input from whales; which is extremely troubling I find. Western AAA game companies have gone down the tubes for the most part.

But, no real loss to me. Time for more Indies that are more fun! The only real success I ever heard with AAA gaming in recent days has been games that are from FromSoftware; which is not Western. And they made a some Western game companies very jealous (like Ubisoft) with Elden Ring. 😁

Anyway, this site here https://macrotransactions.org/ is cool for listing in detail about how egregious the micro transactions are for a lot of popular games. And those certain games made by certain game companies, where the devs refuse to support Proton score an E, or a huge F. I won't play a game with so much as a single B rating if I decided to ever venture with online gaming. Only A rating will do. The guy is awesome for making this site. It would be great if more people can help him add more games to his site; beyond the scope of the popular ones that also share the same tactics. If you find anything that is no longer relevant with a game you play, then please contribute to this guy's efforts. It's a site only run by one person. So, the more help, the better.

And when I compare those low scoring games to this site https://areweanticheatyet.com/ where it lists games with anti cheat that support Proton and ones that are not, it kind of levels out to be honest.

I say this is great. And why Linux is great for gaming. Because it filters out a lot of awful games with egregious micro transactions. And the quality games generally don't have an issue with working on Linux.

Honestly, I am quite happy about it. It's progressive when people are being forced to play better quality games and move away from those lazy and greedy game companies. If they are so determined to move over to Linux entirely because of how chaotic Microsoft is today, that is. And I have to say Valve is doing a great job at making gaming on Linux go even further.

EDIT:

For all the whales coming here, who are going to flip out at me more because they can't handle me saying the truth as to where a lot of AAA gaming is headed today with the monetization, watch this video before commenting, please. That guy might actually make you think about what kind of dystopia you are actually supporting. ☺️

Also, I won't be responding to anyone this time. Because 'humans' who are in denial will comment so they can attack me, 'another human', for saying some truth; saying that I am coping because certain games don't work on Linux. Not the case. In fact, I am glad I never considered playing those games with shady monetization practices. So, those can stay on Microsoft's terrible operating system.

FINALLY, if mods remove this post, then I know they really don't want gaming on Linux to succeed. Because the games companies that refuse to support Proton tend to have to worst monetization practices. It goes hand in hand, after all. And this monetization of gaming has really ruined AAA gaming as a whole. People need to acknowledge this fact more.

Choosing a distro that suits my needs

Hello. Linux newbie here. I am a lifetime Windows user and I wanted to give Linux a spin as my main OS. However, after a quick search, I am torn between a few distros:

  • Kubuntu
  • Fedora
  • OpenSUSE
  • Nobara

My primary usage would be gaming but I want a future proof OS that is also well suited for any other type of usage. I want something noob proof that will work out of the box with the least amount of tweaks possible. The only preference I have is KDE.
I also have a few specific questions:

  • What's better for a beginner between stable and rolling releases?
  • Which OS will give me the best chance to find solutions on forums thanks to a large user base?
  • Will Kubuntu have compatibility issues if I install FlatPack support? And are snaps really as bad as the community makes them out to be?
  • Should I be worried about Nobara not being future proof enough and not having as much support available being a smaller scale project than Fedora?

I know that's a lot of questions but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Rdr2 freezes my computer on startup

Just a little over a month ago I started using Linux (Ubuntu 20.04), I've been trying to play rdr2 these last few days and the system just freezes. my computer is not very powerful and that could be the reason, but I'm not sure. I tried to change the lunch options but nothing. I have an i5-10300H and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX™ 1650. Could someone help me?

Terminal Help/Mistake

Ok, so I was trying to add Flatpak so I could do Flathub. I was following a guide and the last part of part 1 of 2 was to add this into the terminal.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Well apparently at some point in that part I put Flathube instead of Flathub. So now when I try to follow part 2 instructions to install mincreaft bedrock edition through flathub, it won't work because of the mistake I made back in part 1.

So is there anyway to correct that mistake? Because I tried to go back, and re-enter the correct line in terminal, but apparently that doesn't override the mistake.

CS2 Freezes After Gameplay - Linux Mint 21.3 (i5-11400H, RTX 3050 Mobile)

Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm encountering freezing issues with CS2 on Linux Mint 21.3. The game starts normally, but after playing a few rounds, my entire computer freezes and becomes unresponsive. I'm forced to perform a hard shutdown by holding the power button, or sometimes "CTRL + ALT + Backspace x2" brings me back to the login screen.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • I've already significantly reduced in-game graphics settings, even below the recommended settings, but the freezing persists.
  • I've tried both the latest NVIDIA drivers (550.54.14) and the recommended ones (535.171.04), with no improvement.
  • I've verified the integrity of the CS2 game files to ensure no corruption.

System Information:

  • OS: Linux Mint 21.3
  • CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11400H @ 2.70GHz
  • RAM: 8GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA Corporation GA107M [GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile]

Sound incredibly distorted in Minecraft (possibly only Arch Linux) fix

I tried playing a 1.20 mod pack on Arch and the sound came out really distorted, it took me a while to find out what it was but it turns out my launcher wasn't using the System OpenAL, so I wanted to make this short newbie guide just in case anyone else had the same problem.

I was originally getting "[ALSOFT] (EE) Failed to set real-time priority for thread: Operation not permitted (1)", though I found out this was just a warning message and didn't really mean anything.

For ATLauncher, it is "Use System OpenAL?" in the "Java/Minecraft" in the Settings tab.

For PolyMC/Prism Launcher, it is in Settings --> Minecraft --> Tweaks --> "Use system installation of OpenAL"

If you have another launcher and you wanna add it in the comments you should do so. :D

Can't get proton games to stay on cache ccds?

I am just giving linux a shot after quite a few years back on windows. Mostly because Proton seems so good now .

Anyways, I have a 7950X3D. In windows I use process lasso to pin basically everything to the non-x3d cores automatically, then when anything is run from the steam folder (or other game folders), it gets assigned to the high cache x3d cores.

In linux, it seems with games using Proton, the best way is through setting the WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=16:0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 (checked in lstopo) variable. So I added this to launch options.

But when running the game, it seems to use all cores fairly equally. I would expect the non cache cores to be mostly idle like they are in windows and like they are in linux before I launch the game. But they all go to about 30% or so with various fluctuations.

I even tried right clicking the process in the system monitor and setting the affinity but even that doesnt make it so the correct cores get used.

Can anyone point at what I'm doing wrong ?

Whole declaration of independence coming up!

I used to want to switch to Linux as a whole due to how fast games, software, etc can be on Linux; but for whatever reason ScriptHookV.NET for GTA 5 wouldn't work on Linux, so I was never able to do a switch. But last week on Wednesday when I was using Linux Mint as a placeholder OS for my PC I did just for fun a test to see if it would work this time by trying to install .NET 4.8 and stuff, which was also not working and was the main cause of why ScriptHookV.NET was not working; and to my surprise somehow both .NET 4.8 and other .NET versions successfully installed, and when I went to boot up the game ScriptHookV.NET also successfully booted. So you know what I did? I rushed to Debian's website to yoink their NetInstaller and flash it to my USB, and I got ready to do a full switch to Linux by the next day. Long story short it took me 2 days and a half to set this installation up, and here it is! A clean installation of Debian 12 with KDE Plasma, the Liquorix Kernel, and all programs installed the correct way. I'm proud to be finally using Linux after 16 years of using Windows as a daily-driving OS and having to deal with debloating, tweaking, etc everytime I would do a reinstall.

Ok I can't run games anymore on Steam Proton.

Idk how but I suddenly have been completely unable to reinstall these fresh. I need proton steam and wine to be reinstalled 100% fresh. I was originally on kubuntu but didn't like it's gaming performance and lack of support for certain plugins. Every time I go to try to reinstall steam it just loads the same borked profile that doesn't launch anything despite a game saying it's running. And sadly I can't figure out for the life of me what the fresh reinstall function is. Tried reinstalling packages through assistant, same thing, loads back into my user profile on steam on borked installation.

How do you purge and reinstall on Garuda/ArchLinux? I'm at a loss here.

CS2 stuttering while reaching high fps

Been trying to run CS2 natively on my Arch system and i have yet to find a thread that pinpoints my problem. My game‘s stuttering when it has to do more GPU intense things (like molotovs, smokes and discord screenshare for some reason) yet it theoretically reaches above 200 FPS on average. I‘ve tried using gamemode but it didn’t change anything from what i could tell.

When capping it to 165 FPS (my refresh rate) the game went pretty smooth but i can feel the input lag but starts to lag out again when starting discord screenshares even though it still reaches its fps cap.

My Specs are: -AMD Ryzen 5 5600X -Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 -32 GB Vengeance DDR4 Ram -MSI B550 -some redmi 165hz monitor I am using the latest version of Arch on I3 - without a compositor

I am >kind of< a noob (set my arch up 4 months ago) so be warned I guess.

can I use obs-gamecapture system-wide?

I use the OBS plugin obs-gamecapture (previously known as obs-vkcapture) to capture my gameplay. I typically use it from Steam with a launch option, straight from terminal to record Dolphin/fceux, or from Heroic via an environmental variable option (OBS_VKCAPTURE=1). I can then add "Game Capture" as a source on OBS and it will record any DXVK/vk3d/opengl game. (It is useful because you don't have to alt-tab or leave the game's window to select the window in OBS, and it is also better for game/recording performance.)

I've heard that you can just set this variable/option somewhere, either in /etc/environment or .bashrc, to have obs-gamecapture running automatically system wide, so you don't have to worry about individual launch options etc. But every time I try the suggestions they never work. I've tried exporting it as well but it didn't work. If anyone else has accomplished this what was the method you used?

"game" not responding on ubuntu

I am using ubuntu 22.04 lts on pretty average pc(r 5 3400g, rx 6500xt, 16gb ram). I have a problem in almost every game. A program not responding error is literally popping up every few minutes and its so annoying. Usually I just click the "wait" button and game continues to work without problems. Is there a way to turn off this "program not responding" thing?
